Win-win situations are rare in the NFL.
But the potential pause in contract negotiations between C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans could be one of those rare situations.
The Texans quarterback is entering his fourth year in the NFL, and while the team already exercised his fifth-year option paying him $26 million in 2027, the two sides were working on a potential contract extension. According to recent reports, Stroud turned down a contract offer from the team that would see him join the list of 12 quarterbacks making in the $50 million per year range. Granted, there is a lot of wiggle room with that number and how such an offer may have been structured, but despite general manager Nick Caserio placing a Week 1 deadline on an extension, Stroud seems ready to play the season out without a new contract.
And place a big bet on himself.
From Stroud's point of view, this might seem like a risk, but a calculated one at that. The last time we saw Stroud on an NFL field was on a wet and raw January afternoon in Foxborough, as Stroud threw four interceptions in a loss to the New England Patriots in the Divisional Round. It was Houston's third loss in the Divisional Round during Stroud's tenure, and one that some Texans fans might be right to think cost the franchise its first trip to the Super Bowl, given what happened to Bo Nix's ankle the day before.
But that end to the season, while a dismal one, is just one game over a three-year career. And in that stretch Stroud helped the Texans to three consecutive playoff appearances. While his best statistical season came during his rookie year in 2023, when he threw for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns against just five interceptions, his numbers bounced back a bit in 2025 from the 2024 campaign.
For example, Stroud posted an Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt of 6.4 during 2025 — up from the 5.4 mark he posted in 2024 — and his QBR of 61.7 was the best of his career. That also ranked 12th in the NFL.
That trend could work in his favor as he bets on himself this season.
What could also work in his favor is the Houston defense. The Texans added Kayden McDonald, Jadeveon Clowney, Logan Hall, and Reed Blankenship to a unit that was one of the league's best last season, and shows no signs of slowing down. That Houston defense propelled the franchise to the Divisional Round last year — and kept them in that game against the Patriots — and Stroud stands to benefit from that unit's production this year as well.
Meaning that a continued uptick in production, coupled with a defense that could be good enough to spark an even-deeper playoff run this year, would be reasons for Stroud to see an even bigger contract offer at the end of the season. And again, we do not know the exact terms of the offer on the table in front of him, so we do not know how much of that reported "$50 million range" comes via guaranteed money. But if Stroud's bet pays off — and again there are reasons to think it will from his point-of-view — then it will be worth the wait for the quarterback.
And with the quarterback market continuing to increase dramatically, it is another reason for Stroud to be patient.
From the team's perspective, if Stroud ends the year by giving you a reason to pay him — perhaps in the form of a Lombardi Trophy — then the price will be worth it.
But if you get to the end of the season and he has not earned that big contract extension through his play, then as a franchise you've avoided a situation that has hampered some other teams in the league.
