Kelsey Mitchell holds the cards in Indianapolis, and coming off a blistering season where she led the Indiana Fever back into the postseason, the four-time All-Star hits unrestricted free agency with considerable leverage.
Recording impressive production and consistently bailing out broken possessions, her future with the franchise has been up for a hot debate across the Fever fanbase, with ESPN legend Linda Cohn also chiming in, though her stance did not exactly win any admirers.

Linda Cohn's Roster Formula For Indiana Draws Fire Across Social Media
ESPN veteran Cohn sparked the conversation this week by declaring that Indiana's next front office should view two players as untouchable foundations, arguing that building around Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston must remain the priority.
Regarding Mitchell, the veteran broadcaster began her assessment by noting how little is settled within the franchise.
"We don't even know if she's going to sign with the Fever. We don't even know if she's going to be back. We don't know. And I'm not sure I'd want her back, as long as they find potential free agents that can pick up that scoring load," Cohn said, while backing Mitchell's right to test the market.
"We know she's talented. And we know she's going to look for the big bucks elsewhere. And good for her; that's why you're an unrestricted free agent. You can do what you want. It's great. I'm over the Kelsey Mitchell thing. She can go if she has to," Cohn said.

Supporters and critics on YouTube immediately staked out opposing corners online.
Some saw Mitchell's isolation-heavy style as an awkward fit alongside Clark's pass-first approach, as one fan laid out the entire roadmap: "Fever checklist: Hire competent GM. Hire new coach. Run offense through Caitlin Clark… Replace Mitchell with a shooting guard that can get you 12-16 points, play solid defense, and actually pass the ball back to Caitlin Clark."
Another fan welcomed Cohn's willingness to address the elephant in the room: "Thank you for being so honest. It's the first time I've heard someone say something true about K.M. Let it stay or go. Let's move on."
Nonetheless, a vocal portion of the fanbase was protective of Mitchell's veteran presence.

"I agree that most of these players probably would love to play with Caitlin Clark and such an enthusiastic fan base," one hoops fan wrote. "You always have to qualify where these reports come from… Kelsey Mitchell played with MVP chants ringing in her ears most of the year. I cannot believe she hates playing here… I think she wants money. It is her best chance for a big contract. And I would love to see her back."

One user argued that the Fever can look abroad or pursue younger, more versatile wings: "Good article, Linda. (Sheri) Sam is a good hire, as is grabbing Vernard Hollins to scout… There will be enough, and there are certainly options overseas; they should start with Raquel Carrera… As for Kelsey, whilst CC doesn't want to see it, CC will be better without her."
The production Cohn wants Indiana to make up came at a record pace. Mitchell's 24.7 points per game was a career best, up from 20.2 PPG in 2025.

Whoever makes the final pitch to Mitchell will sit in an executive chair that is currently empty, as the Fever dismissed general manager Amber Cox following their postseason elimination.
The franchise brought in Sheri Sam as assistant general manager and added veteran overseas pro Vernard Hollins as a scout, as the team prepares to make immediate, crucial decisions ahead of the new season.
