Caleb Williams played only three seasons as a starting quarterback in college football. That was still enough time for him to become one of the sport's most polarizing figures.

Williams appeared at No. 10 in ESPN writer Ryan McGee's ranking of college football's greatest villain s. He was the youngest person included in the top 10 and finished alongside names whose reputations were built over several decades.
The former Oklahoma and USC quarterback did not generate controversy through dirty play or a major scandal. Much of the resentment surrounding him came from how completely he represented college football's changing era.
Williams transferred, followed his coach, earned substantial name, image and likeness money, appeared in national advertisements and openly expressed his emotions. In other words, he became a target for embracing opportunities that modern college football created.
Williams became the face of a changing sport
Williams began his career at Oklahoma before entering the transfer portal and following Lincoln Riley to USC. That move immediately created two groups eager to root against him. Oklahoma fans were furious about Riley's departure, while USC's national profile ensured Williams would be scrutinized every week.

He did not struggle under that spotlight. Williams threw for 4,537 yards and 42 touchdowns during his first season with the Trojans, winning the 2022 Heisman Trophy. His creativity, arm strength and ability to escape pressure made him one of college football's most entertaining players.
Success did not make him universally popular. Williams painted messages on his fingernails, celebrated demonstratively and never appeared particularly interested in satisfying critics who wanted a more traditional quarterback image. He also became one of the first college football players to demonstrate the full commercial potential of the NIL era.
McGee noted that Williams appeared in national television advertisements during his own games, something that still felt jarring when it happened.

The reaction became deeply personal
The strangest moment in Williams' villain story came after USC lost to Washington in November 2023.
With the Trojans' championship hopes effectively finished, Williams climbed into the stands and cried while being embraced by his mother. Rather than treating it as an understandable reaction from a disappointed college athlete, many fans mocked him on social media.
That response revealed how far the public perception of Williams had shifted. Everything he did was viewed through the same unflattering lens, even when the moment had nothing to do with money, transfers or self-promotion.

Other names in ESPN's ranking actively cultivated villain status. Spurrier taunted rivals. Brian Bosworth challenged the NCAA. Johnny Manziel flashed his money celebration and publicly embraced the chaos surrounding him. Lane Kiffin developed a reputation for dramatic exits.
Williams' supposed offenses were more symbolic. He became the face of player empowerment at a time when parts of the audience were still uncomfortable with athletes having that much control.
He was confident, successful, wealthy and willing to be different. For modern college football, that combination was enough to make him a villain.
