Cam Newton has been vocal about how he feels regarding the Patriots ’ success in the regular season.
The former NFL MVP shares those same sentiments about New England ’s playoff path thus far that included wins against the Los Angeles Chargers and the Houston Texans .
“The New England Patriots have had the easiest road to the Super Bowl in NFL history,” Newton said on his “4th & 1″ podcast . “First off, going into Foxborough, the first team that you play, the Los Angeles Chargers — bottom tier team. Not a team expected to have a deep playoff push. Justin Herbert isn’t who we thought Justin Herbert was. He don’t got nobody protecting him, I was praying for him.
“And they played another team that came into Foxborough that was deficient skillfully — Houston Texans . Nico Collins , out. That was not the best version of that team," he continued . “ C.J. Stroud throwing four interceptions, having a passer rating that was conducive to him just taking a step back and spiking the ball.”
While the Texans — who boasted the league’s best defense going into Gillette Stadium — were without their star receiver in Collins as well as offensive tackle Trent Brown , Drake Maye didn’t have his best game , either.
The Patriots quarterback threw an interception, was sacked five times and lost two fumbles. New England’s defense was stellar and dominated the Texans throughout the game.
Newton has constantly dismissed the Patriots and Maye all season. While he said the second-year quarterback had a great season, he wanted to see him play more “well and capable competition” before dubbing him a top-five quarterback.
Newton also claimed Maye was a game manager , not a game-changer, and called the Patriots’ success “ fool’s gold ” on two occasions . He tripled down on that on his podcast.
“They ain’t played everybody’s best,” he said . “The New England Patriots are a good team, but the New England Patriots have not also faced anyone that’s also good.”
The Patriots earned wins over the Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers — both on the road — in the regular season, and made easy work of the Cleveland Browns — who had one a top defense in the NFL.
There’s no doubting the Patriots’ strength of schedule was one of the easiest in the NFL this season. But they didn’t make the schedule, they just showed up and won 14 of the 17 games put in front of them.
New England’s next task is the Denver Broncos . Their situation won’t make Newton’s belief — or lack thereof — any stronger because starting quarterback Bo Nix fractured his ankle in Denver’s overtime win to advance to the AFC Championship Game.
Jarrett Stidham will get the start.
“You are going up against the second-string quarterback in Jarrett Stidham ,” Newton said . “Their opponents have been deficient.”
