PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers were able to earn a much-needed 139-129 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night as they look to stay in the race for the top 6 in the Eastern Conference despite the injuries up and down the roster.
The Sixers received a historic Cam Payne night as he scored 32 points off the bench with 10 assists. He had a near-perfect shooting night as he was 9-for-10 from the floor, 8-for-8 from deep, and 6-for-6 from the foul line. The eight 3s he made were the most made in Sixers history without a miss.
On a night where there was some obvious NBA history in Miami regarding Bam Adebayo scoring 83 points , the Sixers had some history of their own on Tuesday.
"It's crazy," Payne said of his historic night. "My initial reaction is just like, that's crazy. Like, Tyrese ( Maxey ) ain't did that (expletive)? Honestly, I'm just, I don't know. I just feel like, finally. Like, that's how I feel like, finally. I know I've been getting in my work, getting in my shots, just like, Finally, man. Like, hopefully I'm turning this corner, getting back to how I normally been playing. So hopefully I can stay hot, that's the goal. Stay hot."
Payne has had an arduous journey back to the NBA. After 10 seasons in the league, and a productive 2024-25 season with the New York Knicks , he found himself playing overseas in Serbia playing for Partizan. With the Sixers needing guards following the Jared McCain trade, they brought him back to Philadelphia --where he spent half of the 2023-24 season--on a deal for the rest of the season.
"That's really like a good monkey off my back to show people that I'm good enough," Payne said of his journey. "Like I said last night (Monday in Cleveland ), I need to be more consistent and be more efficient every single night. So I just got to keep bringing that, changing the game. That's what I do."
With the injury to Maxey, the Sixers will need more of these nights from Payne. He will need to bottle up this type of performance and continue to find his rhythm off the bench. He is a sparkplug type of player and will need to help Philadelphia stay afloat on the offensive end. It had been a struggle before Tuesday's performance. The hope now is to keep this going.
"That's what I achieved to do coming off the bench," Payne added. "Bench guys, you have to have a different kind of motor, because you don't really have that much time sometimes. So you need to come in, find a way to change the game, and that was my goal tonight, and sometimes, man, the nights turn into big nights, and that was the case tonight."
As the Sixers now head to Detroit to face the East-leading Pistons , Payne hopes to keep things moving in the right direction.
"Hopefully, it keeps me going," Payne finished. "Hopefully, I take it into the game against Detroit in a couple days and, man, it just felt good to see it go in. I know I'm capable. I don't know, man. It's just good to see him go in tonight. Man, hope I can keep it going."
