The Preseason Spotlight Shifts
The New England Patriots kick off their 2026 preseason tonight against the Indianapolis Colts , and the usual stars will sit out. Drake Maye and other starters won't be on the field, which shifts the entire focus to the depth chart. This game isn't just about getting reps; it's a make-or-break moment for lesser-known players who need to grab attention. Fans watching on 98.5 The Sports Hub will see a different team than the one that starts the regular season, creating a unique opportunity for under-the-radar talent to change their trajectory.

With the top-tier players resting, the coaching staff will rely heavily on the second and third-team units to get meaningful work done. The absence of the starters means the spotlight falls squarely on players who have been fighting just to make the 53-man roster. This specific matchup against the Colts offers a clear stage for these athletes to prove they belong in the NFL. If they perform well here, they could secure a spot or at least draw interest from other teams looking for depth.
Dorner's Path to the Roster
Cameron Dorner stands out as the primary candidate to capitalize on this opportunity. Fluid route-running abilities and consistent playmaking during training camp have already been displayed by the undrafted rookie. Reports from Pats Pulpit highlight that Dorner won his 1-on-1 matchups in joint practices on Tuesday, proving he can compete physically. Although he mostly plays on the third team, occasional second-team reps show coaches are noticing his progress.
The Patriots have seven wide receivers who could make the team, creating a clear break among tiers where Dorner sits at the top of the next level. While the depth at the position makes it unlikely he will make the team out of camp, his performance in preseason games could change that narrative. Whether in New England or another location, the analysis indicates Dorner has the potential to become a genuine NFL receiver. Other teams, including the Colts and Eagles, will be watching him closely while practicing against him to see if they can steal a potential asset.

Should Dorner replicate his training camp performance during games, the fan base will likely grow to love him. He represents the latest undrafted free agent that everyone will be pulling for to make the team. The upcoming game against the Colts is the first real test to see if his practice success translates to game speed. A strong showing here won't just help him stay in Foxborough; it could define his entire professional future.
Players like Dorner are the lifeblood of a team's long-term success, even if they don't start immediately. The NFL is a league where undrafted gems often become core contributors, and this preseason is the first step in that journey. For Dorner, the stakes are incredibly high because the margin for error is so thin. He has to show that he can handle the speed of the game and make plays when it counts. The coaching staff needs to see consistency, not just flashes of brilliance, to justify keeping him over other options.
The evaluation process is ruthless, and every snap counts toward a final decision. Dorner's ability to win 1-on-1 matchups in practice is a great start, but the preseason game provides the only real data point for game performance. If he can replicate his practice success against the Colts' defense, he will force the team to reconsider his roster status. This is the moment where potential meets reality, and the outcome will determine if he stays in the league.
