Can't Wait For Saturday ACC fans need to keep an eye on another Mendoza

Apr. 19—***

Alberto Mendoza could have stayed at Indiana and battled to replace his Heisman Trophy-winning brother Fernando as starting quarterback.

But he chose a different path. One that appears to be working out just fine.

The younger Mendoza transferred to Georgia Tech to play for Brent Key. And he has apparently been impressive, moving into position to be the starter this season.

After Saturday's spring game, Key called Mendoza "the guy," a good indication he will take the first snap when the Yellow Jackets open Sept. 3 against Colorado.

Georgia Tech needs to replace departed Haynes King , a talented dual-threat quarterback.

Alberto Mendoza played in nine games backing up his brother in 2025 and was impressive. In limited duty, he completed 18 of 24 passes for 286 yards and five scores. He was intercepted once. Like his brother, Alberto was an effective runner, gaining 190 yards on just 13 carries.

Indiana is expected to start Josh Hoover at quarterback in defense of its national title. Hoover transferred to Bloomington from TCU.
