The St. Louis Cardinals are set to play the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. Rookie JJ Wetherholt has played a crucial role in the Cardinals' success this season. Despite being in a rebuild, the Cardinals have upset expectations . Wetherholt, however, is not playing on Friday due to a groin injury. There's a chance he may not play on Saturday as well. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol commented on the decision to hold Wetherholt out of the lineup, via Derrick Goold.
"Not going to push through and lose him first weeks," Marmol said.
There is no reason to risk further injury. The Cardinals are understandably being cautious. The hope is seemingly that Wetherholt will be able to avoid a stint on the injured list.
The 23-year-old infielder has recorded a slash line of .249/.357/.400 across 58 games played. He has nine home runs, seven doubles and seven stolen bases as well.
The Cardinals will continue to monitor and provide updates on JJ Wetherholt's injury status as they are made available.
Meanwhile, St. Louis will enter the ball game on Friday with a 32-28 record. The ball club is five games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central standings. As for the Reds, Cincinnati is 31-30 and in last place in the NL Central. They are 6.5 games back of first place.
It is a competitive division. Each team in the NL Central could still make a run at winning the division.
First pitch for the Reds and Cardinals matchup on Friday night is scheduled for 8:15 PM EST.
