Brighton and Hove Albion 's busy transfer business is set to continue, as Carl Rushworth looks to be the next monster profit for the Albion to make this summer.
Rushworth signed for the club back in 2019 from the Halifax Town academy after being released by Huddersfield at the age of just 16 years old. He subsequently joined Worthing FC on loan and quickly became noticed for his very encouraging talents.
Big profits... but will he ever play for Brighton again?
It is quite crazy to look back on a released youngster as someone who is now a £30 million transfer in the Premier League (£22.5 million plus £7.5 million in instalments); the Seagulls will have made a hefty profit on the once encouraging youngster without him even kicking a ball in an Albion shirt.
Most intriguingly, Brighton have reportedly inserted a 'first refusal' clause in his deal, as well as a 'hefty' sell-on clause. A first refusal means that should he be sold by Coventry in the future, Brighton will have the first right to match the offer and bring him back to the club. A strong piece of business considering his potential and the fact that Bart Verbruggen may leave the club in the very near future.
Arguably, if Manuel Neuer were to leave Bayern Munich this season, he could have even left now, and Rushworth would be Albion's current number one goalkeeper.
With that said, it makes sense for Rushworth to finally establish himself at a club permanently. He has spent almost every season since 2019 on loan across the country while consistently performing as one of the best players at each club he has joined in the process.
From Worthing to Lincoln to Coventry, he has been a standout player and impressed every fanbase who have had the joy of watching him on a semi-consistent basis.
Whether he remains at Coventry or ever returns to the club remains to be seen. At just 25, he still has a long way to go in his career before he even hits his prime years. Most Brighton fans will be very intrigued to see how he progresses in the Premier League.
Last season, he was not only Coventry's Player of the Season but also kept the most clean sheets in the Championship (17) while making the EFL Championship Team of the Season.
It seems inevitable that Rushworth could one day be competing for the starting England position once Jordan Pickford retires, and maybe then we could see a return to the south coast! All the best, Carl!
