Carlos Boozer on biggest difference between Kobe Bryant and LeBron James: "Kobe believes he can do it by himself"

Carlos Boozer played alongside a rookie LeBron James and an aging Kobe Bryant during his career. While he never saw either at the height of their dominance, Boozer was able to observe their distinct styles, work ethics and approach to the game, noting both what they shared as elite players and what set them apart.

According to the former Duke standout, Bryant maintained his cold-blooded assassin mentality until his twilight years. Boozer described his approach to the game as more selfish than James', as Black Mamba often preferred to shoulder the weight of taking over, especially in critical situations.

Meanwhile, Boozer said James operated as a natural facilitator, viewing the game through a lens of total connectivity. While he acknowledged that LeBron shared Kobe's insatiable hunger for victory and scoring prowess, his approach was centered on harnessing the collective strength of the entire team.

"[Laughs] If it was only that simple. They're both so different," Boozer told Clutchpoints in 2018. "I can't sit here and tell you who is better. I got LeBron at the very, very beginning. I got Kobe at the very, very end. So it's different, but as a fan of basketball and someone that played at a high level, they both have an insatiable appetite for winning. They will go through any brick wall. They have tireless work ethic and they both have that will when you're down by 20, they can come back and win it."

"They both want to win, but they do it in different ways," he continued. "Kobe believes he can do it by himself. He can score 50 points. He can score 80 points. He can score whatever it takes to win. LeBron loves to get everybody involved."

Booz puts Kobe and LeBron on his Mount Rushmore

To Boozer, comparing Bryant and James should never be about picking a side. He looks at it as appreciating two distinct paths leading to the same peak of greatness.

No matter how many times Boozer encountered these questions, he knew exactly where to put Kobe and James in his book.

"They're both winners," Boozer added of two NBA legends. "Obviously, they're both champions. They're both two of the GOATS that are on the NBA Mount Rushmore for me."

Kobe made LeBron better

James himself has often reflected on the profound impact Bryant had on his career . He once openly admitted that Kobe was the primary force that pushed him to reach the highest level both physically and mentally.

During their overlapping years in the league, James viewed Bryant not just as a fierce rival but, more importantly, as a true inspiration. He used Kobe's legendary work ethic as the blueprint to refine his own discipline and mentality.

"We've always competed against one another and we always wanted to dethrone each other," LeBron said . "But we always had that mutual respect because we knew how much we put into the game."

Ultimately, both LeBron and Kobe exemplified unparalleled discipline and enduring dedication. Still, as Boozer noted, choosing between them is never wrong — because their styles are so distinct, the decision ultimately comes down to personal preference.
