The New York Mets fell to 34-47 after being swept by the Chicago Cubs . They have lost their last six games overall. New York decided a change needed to be made.
The Mets have now fired manager Carlos Mendoza , via Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Andy Green will take over as interim manager.
Hired in 2023, Mendoza went 206-199 in his first stint as an MLB manager. New York advanced to the NLCS during his first season with the franchise. However, the Mets never made it back to the playoffs under him. With how bad the 2026 season has been going, New York didn't want to wait until the offseason to get their fresh start.
Mendoza's firing came after one of the more embarrassing games in franchise history . In a 10-3 loss to the Cubs, the Mets committed six infield errors. In what has now become one of his final press conferences with the franchise, Mendoza blasted his former team for their error-filled ways, via SNY.
"It's just routine plays that are costing us," Mendoza said. "At this level, you expect to make plays like that. Those are routine plays."
Mendoza will now no longer be around to see how the Mets bounce back from their current slump. The franchise is sure to look much different when they begin play in 2027. It's a long road to get to that point. But New York remains committed to getting their franchise back into playoff contention.
Green will have an opportunity to prove he is the right man for the job. But after seeing Mendoza fizzle out, the Mets will turn over every stone to get the manager they think fits best.
