As MLB umpire CB Bucknor was hit in the mask off a foul-tip on April 1 during the 8-2 win for the Milwaukee Brewers over the Tampa Bay Rays , he has not been seen since the event. With Bucknor known for his botch calls , which the new Automated Ball-Strike system has overturned plenty of times already, there were some who thought the league kept him out of games, but that is not the case.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Bucknor continues not to officiate games "for health reasons," and not because he is being disciplined by the MLB for the calls.
"Nearly two months after getting struck in the face mask by a foul ball, umpire CB Bucknor remains sidelined for health reasons, and not because of any disciplinary action from Major League Baseball," Rosenthal wrote on Thursday.
Bucknor himself would even say, via The Athletic, that he is still reeling from the impacts of taking the foul ball to his head, which came off a Jacob Misrowski pitch that went 100.2 miles per hour . Someone who has been involved in the situation with Bucknor said that the umpire is not being "benched" by the league, and that isn't a situation that happens, as people have critiqued him on his calls.
"He isn't being benched," the person said to Rosenthal. "That's not a real thing."
CB Bucknor has been the victim of many ABS challenges
To get a second confirmation, a second individual would say that Bucknor being sidelined for the amount of time it's been is "not disciplinary in nature."
"A second person familiar with Bucknor's absence confirmed the umpire's time away 'certainly is not disciplinary in nature,'" Rosenthal wrote.
While Bucknor has been called out before for his calls, this season has been more apparent due to the implementation of the ABS, as he has said before. In fact, on the second day of the MLB season, Bucknor was challenged eight times , overturned six times, twice by Cincinnati Reds ' Eugenio Suarez on what would've been strikeout pitches.
It remains to be seen when Bucknor returns to being an umpire.
