New Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jamel Dean believes he was born to wear the black and gold.

The Pittsburgh Steelers clearly believe that new cornerback Jamel Dean will help improve their defense after signing him to a three-year contract in free agency. However, he further explained why he thinks he’s a perfect fit for the team.

“Physical and relentless,” Dean said of the Steelers defense. “I feel like my play style kind of like fits in with the culture that they set on the defensive side of the ball, both sides of the ball, really.”

Dean certainly fits the mold of what Pittsburgh has looked for in its outside cornerback as of late, standing at 6-foot-1, 206 pounds.

Now, he gets to team up with Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. , who he has been keeping an eye on for the past few years.

“I like his game,” Dean continued. “He’s physical at the line of scrimmage. He has great technique. So I’ve been watching him from afar, like appreciate how he plays the game.”

Dean has already been playing at a high level. In 2025, he played in 14 games, recording 46 tackles, one tackle for loss, two quarterback hits, one sack, two forced fumbles, nine passes defended and three interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown against the New York Jets .

He also allowed a 47.7 passer rating rating when targeted last season, and allowed just one touchdown, per Pro Football Focus.

However, Dean has the chance to take his game to another level in 2026 as he’ll likely facing opposing team’s No. 2 wide receivers.

Dean became a full-time starter midway through his second season, helping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl LV title at the end of the 2020 season. Since then, he’s been a regular starter for the team over five seasons, almost exclusively playing at outside cornerback.
