Celtics rookie John Tonje erupts for 42-point performance in G League
Boston Celtics rookie guard John Tonje dropped a career high on Tuesday in the G League, leading the Maine Celtics to a road win over the Osceola Magic.
Tonje produced 42 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in the 119-112 wire-to-wire victory at the Silver Spurs Arena. He finished by shooting 12-of-20 from the field, including eight 3-pointers, and was a plus-10 in 37 minutes, 48 seconds.
The 53rd overall pick is one of seven players to record at least 40 points and eight made 3s in a game this season in the G League. He tallied 15 points in the fourth quarter alone to help the Celtics maintain their advantage over the Magic.
Tonje, signed to a two-way contract, was traded to the Celtics from the Utah Jazz on Feb. 5 in the deal involving Chris Boucher . He was upgraded to a 10-day contract on Feb. 19 to help the Celtics reach the roster minimum of 14 players, and later returned to a two-way deal on March 1.
The former Wisconsin second-team All-American has logged three appearances for coach Joe Mazzulla and the Celtics, including two as a part of his 10-day contract. He has totaled two points, two rebounds and one assist across 11 minutes.
Tonje has spent most of the season in the G League, averaging 18.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 37.8% from 3-point range in 37 games, including five with Maine. He is 26th among all players in the G League in total points (689).
