- Centerville grad starts fifth season with Furman
Centerville High School graduate Tom House scored 22 points for Furman in a 79-70 victory against Bethune-Cookman on Monday, Nov. 2, the opening night of the college basketball season.
The game was part of the Field of 68 Marathon, an eight-game event that started with a game at 12:01 a.m. between High Point and Liberty. Furman played in the final game of the day at 8 p.m.
House is playing his third season at Furman after two seasons at Florida State. He gained a fifth year of eligibility through a lawsuit, filed in the spring, against the NCAA in Ohio.
"I was just grateful to be out there," House said in an interview with the Field of 68 after the game. "It was a whole lot of fun, and it's a different perspective coming back for a fifth year. I just got to play basketball again with my brothers, so it's fun."
The same legal rulings allowed Dayton Flyers guard Javon Bennett to play a fifth season at Gonzaga. He scored five points Monday in a 78-72 victory against Purdue.
House averaged a career-best 8.5 points last season at Furman. On Monday, he made 4 of 8 shots, including 2 of 4 3-pointers, and 12 of 16 free throws in 30 minutes.
Furman played without head coach Bob Richey, who missed the game with an illness. Furman announced before the game that assistant coach Pat Estepp, the former head coach at Cedarville University, will lead the team while Richey is away.
