Manchester City are closing in on an agreement to sign 20-year-old goalkeeper Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday.
Developed within the City Football Academy (CFA), Charles is believed to have completed a medical, coinciding with James Trafford 's expected departure in search of first-team minutes.
Should Enzo Maresca prioritise senior development over a back-up role, QPR have positioned themselves to secure the Northern Ireland international for the 2026/27 campaign.
Manchester City are bracing themselves for widespread interest, should they complete a deal for highly-rated Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Pierce Charles.
The sudden acceleration of movement in the market stems from active interest shown by Premier League suitors including Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur in City's current reserve goalkeeper James Trafford .
Recognising Trafford's ambition to secure consistent, guaranteed top-flight starting minutes rather than serving as secondary cup coverage, Manchester City's hierarchy have swiftly initiated a long-term succession plan.
This search has led back to a familiar face in Pierce Charles , who spent his formative developmental years within the City Football Academy (CFA)before transferring to Hillsboroughin 2021. Despite a turbulent campaign that saw Sheffield Wednesdayrelegated from the Championshipto League One, the 20-year-old emerged as a standout.
His composure on the ball and tactical maturity earned him a step up to senior international status as Northern Ireland'sstarting No.1, turning his re-acquisition into a highly cost-effective market opportunity for the Premier League giants.
Now, according to MailSport's Simon Jones , Manchester City are closing in on a deal to sign goalkeeper Pierce Charlesfrom Sheffield Wednesday, with the 20-year-old initially brought in as cover as James Trafford looks to depart the Etihad Stadium in search of game time.
However, should City opt to head in a different direction regarding the pathway for the Northern Ireland international, it is now reported that Championship club QPR are keen to take Charles on loan for the 2026/27 season.
Reports elsewhere have confirmed Manchester City are finalising an initial £3 million guaranteedfee for Charles, while add-ons and future milestones could push the total transaction past the £10 million markover the coming seasons.
Having successfully completed his medical at the club's facilities on Tuesday, Charles is ready to formalise a long-term contract and provide City with the necessary coverage in the goalkeeper position for the new season, should that be the preferred direction.
The immediate dilemma confronting Enzo Marescaand the club does, however, involve deciding where Pierce Charles can best maximise his prospects, with the chance to act as a direct understudy to Gianluigi Donnarumma offering excellent squad depth.
However, should minutes at senior and a highly competitive level be the priority, Loftus Road may enter the frame with Queens Park Rangerseager to secure an immediate, season-long loan deal to anchor their Championship campaign.
By offering guaranteed first-team exposure under intense competitive pressure, a short-term move to West London would line up with Manchester City's long-term objective of preparing Charles to step into the senior Etihad Stadiumspotlight down the line.
