The Los Angeles Chargers are getting closer to their season opener against the Arizona Cardinals, but they still haven't completely settled one of the most important questions on their offensive line.
The left guard competition remains open, and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel made it clear that the Bolts aren't ready to close the door on any of their options.

That includes veteran offensive lineman Trey Pipkins III, who has continued to receive first-team opportunities at the position after it was assumed that free agent acquisition Kayode Awosika would get the nod as the starter.
"You keep your mind open to all of those things," McDaniel said. "Everyday, we're giving them opportunities to be the best player on the field."
With injuries shaking up their initial plan along the offensive front, Los Angeles has continued giving each guy the opportunity to prove they deserve the starting job.
That said, Pipkins is particularly interesting because of his experience and strong offseason.

The veteran has spent the majority of his career playing right tackle, but the Chargers have shown a willingness to move him around when necessary. Now, after second-round pick Jake Slaughter has had to take over as the starting center, Pipkins has another opportunity to prove he can provide stability on the interior at left guard.
However, Awosika's biggest advantage is familiarity with the position. When the Chargers signed him this offseason, they hoped that his experience could make him the more natural fit for what Los Angeles needs on the interior.
He doesn't need to learn an entirely new position while simultaneously adjusting to a new offense. If Los Angeles wants consistency and someone who can settle into the position without requiring a major transition, Awosika has a strong case.
Pipkins, however, brings a different set of advantages.

Experience with the organization is arguably his biggest selling point. He has played a significant number of snaps for the Chargers and understands the expectations that come with protecting Justin Herbert. While his primary experience has come at tackle, his familiarity with the franchise and the rest of the offensive line could help him make the transition to guard.
That's what makes this competition so interesting.
Awosika offers more natural experience at guard, while Pipkins offers years of experience within the Chargers' system and the flexibility to move around the offensive line.
Neither player has an overwhelming advantage.
And that's exactly why McDaniel is keeping the competition open.
