The Los Angeles Chargers have had a solid training camp and preseason thus far, but there have been a few players battling injuries, with the most notable one being that of center Tyler Biadasz, who will miss the entire 2026 season .
As a result of Biadasz being out, rookie center Jake Slaughter has stepped up to be the starting center and so far it seems that he has been able to perform well and get on the same page with the rest of the Chargers starting offensive line.
During Tuesday's media availability , starting offensive tackle Joe Alt talked about Slaughter and the fact that he believes Slaughter is doing all the right things, which should help him to have a successful rookie season in Los Angeles.
"You know, Jake's, you know, stepped up and I think he's asking a lot of good questions, you know, between, you know, in our in our room individually asking questions. I think, you know, he understands what what's that what that what's that task here and, you know, what he needs to learn and see and improve on. And you know, I think we're all kind of molding really well with Jake so far. And you know, like I said, there's always things to improve. So I think we all are trying to do that together. So it's been a lot of fun," Alt said.
One of the biggest things that Alt said was the fact that Slaughter is asking the right questions, whether that be individually or in the meeting room. As a rookie, that shows a lot of maturity and humility because many players want to act like they know everything and are prepared for the moment.
Slaughter takes a different approach than most rookies and instead wants to clarify things, which will be very helpful for him and the rest of the offensive line. Additionally, as Alt mentioned, Slaughter wants to improve as well, which shows great drive from the rookie and is a great sign early on in Slaughter's career.
On a different note, arguably the most important thing that Alt said about Slaughter was that the offensive line is meshing well with Slaughter, which suggests that the chemistry is solid and should help this unit perform much better than it did a season ago.
Talking about last season, this offensive line had two major injuries, as Alt only played in six games due to an ankle injury, and Rashawn Slater missed the entire season because he tore his patellar tendon during the summer. As a result of those two injuries in particular, the Chargers were very inconsistent up front and actually played 32 different offensive line combinations, which put quarterback Justin Herbert under pressure constantly.
Now, looking at this season, the Chargers seemed like they were going to remain healthy, but then in the joint practice against the San Francisco 49ers early last week, Biadasz went down, which makes it two seasons in a row that Los Angeles has had a major offseason injury on the offensive line.
The difference this time is the fact that the Chargers have Slaughter ready to step right in and contribute rather than having to change everyone's position up front. Additionally, Los Angeles should have both tackles to start the year, with Alt being back at full force and Slater having returned to practice on August 22nd as he continues to progress in the right direction following a flare-up in his knee early in camp.
So, heading into the 2026 season, if Slaughter can continue to progress and the rest of the offensive line can stay healthy, this offense has the potential to be one of the most dynamic and consistent offensive attacks in the entire NFL.
