There's just over a week until all NFL rosters must be cut to 53 players.
Which roster bubble players for the Chargers helped themselves the most due to their performances in Week 2 against the 49ers? With one preseason game left, let's look at who impressed.
CB Rodney Shelley
The undrafted rookie cornerback continued his impressive summer by shutting down explosive plays. He recorded two passes defensed, using his speed to break up deep throws and prevent big gains downfield. In addition to his two defensed passes, Shelley recorded three total tackles. This included an impressive third-quarter stop in which he read a quick screen pass and prevented a yards-after-catch opportunity.
LB Junior Colson
Colson provided the biggest defensive highlight of the night. With edge rusher Nadame Tucker generating pressure up the middle, Colson read the eyes of quarterback Adrian Martinez , jumped the slant route, and caught the ball to walk in for a touchdown. After two consecutive strong preseason performances, one more good performance in the finale against the Rams , and it could be difficult to keep Colson off the final 53-man roster.
EDGE Andre Carter
Carter flashed some legit pass-rush juice, ultimately finishing with four quarterback pressures and a 23.5% win rate. It was an encouraging performance for the fourth-year player, who has the opportunity to pull ahead for the fifth edge rusher spot over Kyle Kennard and Nadame Tucker if he strings together another encouraging game.
OL Jacob Spomer
Following a severe knee injury to starting center Tyler Biadasz during joint practices, Spomer was elevated to the primary backup role. He took over at center for Jake Slaughter early in the second series and played the remainder of the offensive snaps. Spomer was prolific in pass protection, allowing zero pressures across 34 pass-blocking opportunities. He also excelled in run blocking, consistently getting out to the second level quickly to block linebackers.
