In an Inside the NBA tribute to the late Jason Collins , the NBA's first openly gay active player, who passed on May 12, Barkley shared that homophobia is a key reason why many gay athletes keep their sexual identities a secret.
"If another guy did it, it would still be a big deal because we live in a homophobic society, and that's unfortunate," Barkley said. "Anybody who think we ain't got a bunch of gay players in all sports, they're just stupid. But there is such animosity toward the gay community, and that's what's really unfortunate."
Collins, who died of complications due to Stage 4 glioblastoma, came out in 2013. He was diagnosed with brain cancer in December 2025. The late NBA star played center for seven NBA teams during his career. He is most notably known for the years he played for the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets across eight seasons between two different stints. Collins led the team in back-to-back NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003. The Nets released a statement following his death.
"We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Jason Collins . Jason spent eight seasons in a Nets uniform, helping define an era of our franchise and playing a vital role on our back-to-back Eastern Conference championship teams in 2002 and 2003," the Nets wrote on X. "He was a constant in our locker room – selfless, tough, and deeply respected by teammates, coaches, and staff alike. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him."

They concluded their tribute, writing, "Those who were around Jason every day knew him not just as a competitor, but as a genuinely kind, thoughtful person who brought people together. His impact extended far beyond the court, and his courage and authenticity helped move the game – and the world – forward. Jason will always be a part of the Nets family, and he will be deeply missed."
In addition to playing for the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets he also was on the roster Memphis Grizzlies , Minnesota Timberwolves , Atlanta Hawks , Boston Celtics , and Washington Wizards across his 13 season NBA career.
He is survived by his husband, Brunson Green, whom he married in May 2025, his parents, Portia and Paul Collins, and his twin brother, former NBA player Jarron Collins.
