Charles Barkley
is one of the most beloved sports personalities in today's NBA landscape, no doubt about it. Be it his wits, humor, or analysis that never shies away from telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, Charles has become a guy who is simply must-see TV.
So whenever the legendary forward has something to say on air, everyone tunes in. And when he just recently ripped the NBA world for being overly focused on money, from players to owners and even the networks, he put it plain and simple, without sugarcoating it, the only way he knows how.

"The one thing about people making money… You know what they want more of? More money! And I've learned that in my life, no matter how much money people make, they just want more of it. So, the NBA players make a lot of money, the NBA owners make a lot of money, and the one thing they will want more of, is more money…"
Barkley pointed out
in his recent appearance on the "Tom Tolbert Show."
"That's why we on three networks instead of two,"
he added.
Barkley believes business is taking over
Chuck wasn't taking aim at any particular name or franchise; he was firing at the entire thing. In his eyes, greed isn't a side effect anymore. It has become the defining characteristic of the modern NBA.

During his playing days, Barkley was never the guy who shied away from calling out what he saw. Whether it was his own team, league executives, or even legends he deeply respected, Chuck would say it straight. And now, more than ever, he believes that the league has drifted so far into the money-first mentality that the people who end up losing out the most are the fans.
In today's NBA, where revenue is at an all-time high, where the global reach is unlike anything the league has ever seen, and where every single team is monetizing every corner of the product, Barkley feels something fundamental has shifted. Players do everything to maximize their profits and prolong their careers, owners push for new media deals and expanded markets, and networks squeeze every possible second of broadcast time to justify billion-dollar contracts.
Sure, that's business. But Barkley's concern is that the love of the game is slowly but surely fading away. And when the people in power prioritize their pockets over the product, the fans are those who suffer the most.

Is money the root of all evil?
Interestingly enough, this isn't the first time a prominent voice has touched on this growing elephant in the room. Myles Turner
recently spoke on the "Ball in the Family Podcast"about how the massive jump in player salaries — not just for stars, but even for rotational guys — has created bitterness among the old heads who played in the wrong era financially.

"Bro, at the end of the day, this sh-t about our bread, right? They paved the way for us, and they are not getting their dividends,"
Turner pointed out
recently.
Maybe that's just the reality of modern sports. But when someone like Barkley — a guy who has seen every era, battled legends, lived through the highs and lows of the league — says greed has taken over, you can't help but wonder if this will only become an increasing problem in the future.
