Transfer deadline day 2026 saw one of the biggest changes of the summer go down as World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez made a record move from Chelsea to Manchester City . Coming so late in the window, the Blues were left to scramble for a midfield replacement and eventually saw a move for Lamine Camara collapse at the final stage due to AS Monaco reneging on the deal. Many were left upset that the team let such a big player go without signing a replacement but there is an argument to be made that in some ways, they have already replaced the Argentine by splitting his traits between two different roles.

Looking at his previous season, the World Cup winner had a heat map that primarily saw him on the left side of the field, either picking the ball up and passing before the centre circle, or getting it in the half space on the left around the box. The reason he's so valuable is inherently that he can do both, he was operating as a deep ball progressor and turning into an around-the-box number ten at other times.
He contributed 10 goals and four assists in the term with a defensive impact of 0.6 interceptions per 90, two tackles, and 4.7 ball recoveries. He had 74 touches per outing, with accurate passing, 11 big chances created, and some duel-winning. All in all, he was an all-around midfielder, providing progression, goal threat, and defensive solidity.
Replacing all of this in one player on the final day of the window was always going to be an impossible ask, and as the Blues learned, most teams won't give up this level of talent with no time for a replacement. Despite that, the team made a lot of moves this summer and under the leadership of Xabi Alonso, they might be able to replicate this output.
The role of the left half-space attacker was filled by the huge money transfer of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa . This isn't an apples-to-apples comparison, but the Englishman does make up for the attacking threat that the Argentine presented. His Sofascore heat map for his last campaign with Aston Villa shows a lot of red around the box on the left side which is one of the areas that Fernandez was at home in under Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.
With about 49 touches per match, he doesn't quite get on the ball as much and he doesn't have the defensive output but his 10 goals and six assists makes him just as much of a goal threat as the outgoing midfielder.
More importantly, Rogers was a good duel winner, one of the harder aspects to replace. But he is just as good at moving things forward and beating his man, totalling 4.3 per 90, but at a lower winning rate than the man he's replacing.
You're probably wondering right now how replacing half of Fernandez is enough, but fear not, there is one player who joined this summer who could fulfil the other half of the Argentine's role.
Signed from Strasbourg over the summer, Valentin Barco is an under-the-radar move that could be a huge bargain if he is able to step into the boots of his countryman. His Sofascore heat map shows him getting on the ball largely around the centre circle, in his own half or as a recycler in the opposition's end.
At 76 touches per game in Ligue 1 last term, the former Brighton & Hove Albion man could be the solution to progressing the ball from deep and using a metronomic midfielder alongside Moises Caicedo. That said, he isn't just a safe metronome, he is a capable creator, grabbing four assists with 13 big chances created on 6.42 expected assists in the French top flight. While these numbers are sure to face an adjustment period in England, there is enough evidence there that the new signing is a capable ball-player who can operate from a deeper role.
Barco is no slouch on the defensive side either; he had 0.5 interceptions per match, two tackles, and 4.7 ball recoveries, some of those being right in line with what Fernandez was offering.
While it may be considered blasphemous to claim that Chelsea have replaced Enzo Fernandez without making a late dash to sign a midfielder, football isn't necessarily that straightforward. It isn't about plugging a guy into the exact same role, in the exact same positions; it can sometimes be about resharing the duties and making the most of what's available.
The change to a 3-4-2-1 was likely already going to see the former Benfica man move from the all-around role he played to a deeper-lying focus anyway. With the signings of Rogers and Barco there are two talents capable of recreating the passing, the defending, and the goal threat by sharing the responsibilities between the two.
