The Kansas City Chiefs added a handful of exciting rookies in the 2026 NFL Draft to the roster. While much of the attention is on No. 6 overall pick Delane Mansoor, head coach Andy Reid shifted the focus to the club’s fifth-round pick in the draft, Emmett Johnson .
While talking with media members on Monday, Reid claimed that the former Nebraska Cornhuskers running back reminded him of a young LeSean McCoy . Overall, Reid seems to be impressed with Johnson so far, and it sounds like the 22-year-old rusher could make a push for playing time depending on how training camp plays out.
“First of all, he’s got a good feel for things,” said Reid about Johnson. “Smart kid. Good kid. He’s got that lateral quickness. I mean, we had LeSean McCoy here for a bit, and [Johnson’s] got a little bit of [McCoy] to him, where he can shift gears and still get himself upfield quickly. I like the way he pass-protected. I like the way he catches the football. The catching part, he does easy.”
Emmett Johnson played at Nebraska for all four years of his collegiate career. He didn’t break out until his redshirt junior season in the 2025-26 campaign, where he led the Big Ten Conference in rushing yards with 1,451 while scoring 12 touchdowns on the ground. He also played a key role in the passing game for the Cornhuskers, totaling 370 receiving yards off 46 receptions.
Although Andy Reid likes Emmett Johnson’s capabilities on the football field, the newly acquired rookie will have to prove himself worthy of playing time. He’s part of a Chiefs backfield consisting of Kenneth Walker III , Brashard Smith , and Emari Demercado . Kansas City also signed Jaydn Ott and EJ Smith as undrafted free agents.
