The Kansas City Chiefs will head to Seattle with a depleted offensive line after right tackle Jaylon Moore was ruled out for Sunday's matchup with the Seahawks. The absence adds to a growing list of concerns surrounding Patrick Mahomes' protection.
Kansas City also placed left tackle Josh Simmons on injured reserve this week, leaving the team without two options at tackle for a challenging road game. Simmons has been sidelined by a persistent back injury, while Moore is dealing with a concussion.

The Chiefs remain unbeaten at 5-0, but their depth will be tested against a Seattle defense that has recorded 16 sacks through its first six games. Kansas City must find answers up front while also managing other offensive absences.
Jaylon Moore's absence creates another protection problem
Moore did not practice Wednesday, Thursday or Friday while recovering from a concussion sustained during Kansas City's Oct. 18 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chiefs officially ruled him out for the Seattle game.
His absence matters because offensive tackles must handle dangerous edge rushers and protect the quarterback's throwing space. Without Moore, Kansas City will need another solution at right tackle against Seattle's pass rush.

The timing is especially difficult because the Chiefs are already adjusting their lineup on the opposite side. Losing another experienced tackle reduces their flexibility and puts additional pressure on the players stepping into unfamiliar or expanded roles.
Josh Simmons' injured reserve move deepens the concern
Simmons, Kansas City's 2025 first-round draft pick, has yet to play this season because of a bulging disc in his back. The team placed him on injured reserve Thursday to allow more time for rehabilitation.
Chiefs head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder said Simmons' recovery had plateaued, making the move necessary. He indicated that surgery was not being discussed at that point, while the team focused on helping the tackle return to full function.

Simmons' absence had already forced Kansas City to look elsewhere for blindside protection. With him now unavailable for at least four weeks and Moore ruled out against Seattle, the team's tackle depth faces a significant test.
Rookie Kahlil Benson could have an important role

Undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson has been filling in at left tackle during Simmons' absence. The opportunity has given him valuable experience, but the Seahawks matchup brings a demanding test against a defense capable of pressuring quarterbacks.
Benson's development is particularly important because the left tackle usually protects a right-handed quarterback's blind side. Consistent footwork, hand placement and communication can help limit pressure, especially when the opposing defense uses speed to attack the edge.

Kansas City can also use play design to help its tackles, including quicker throws, extra blocking support and movement that changes the rushers' angles. Those adjustments may reduce the burden on inexperienced linemen, although they cannot eliminate every protection challenge.
Seattle's pass rush raises the stakes
The Seahawks have recorded 16 sacks through six games, ranking among the NFL's more productive teams in that category entering Week 7. That production makes Kansas City's injury situation especially relevant ahead of Sunday night.
Seattle's defense can create problems when edge rushers win quickly and force a quarterback to move before routes develop. Mahomes' ability to escape pressure helps, but constant disruption can limit the offense's timing and available options.

The Chiefs will need to identify Seattle's pressure looks and communicate effectively before the snap. Protecting the edges, avoiding missed assignments and keeping Mahomes in manageable passing situations could prove central to their offensive plan.
Mahomes is practicing fully despite a knee listing
Mahomes appeared on the injury report with a knee issue, but the Chiefs' official report listed him as a full participant in practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. He has no game-status designation on the final report.
That participation in practice is encouraging for Kansas City, but it does not solve the protection problem in front of him. The quarterback may be available without restrictions, yet still face a tougher assignment due to changes along the offensive line.

Kansas City has built its offense around Mahomes' passing ability and his capacity to extend plays. With the tackle rotation unsettled, quick decisions and disciplined pocket movement could become even more important against Seattle.

Rashee Rice's absence adds pressure to the offense
The Chiefs will also be without wide receiver Rashee Rice, who was ruled out after missing practice all week with hamstring and knee issues. His absence removes another option from an offense preparing for a difficult road matchup.
Rice has not played since being injured during the Oct. 4 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Kansas City must continue to distribute targets among its remaining receivers while finding ways to keep its passing attack productive.

Tight end Travis Kelce has been limited in practice with an ankle injury but has no game designation on the final report. His availability could help, although the offense still faces the challenge of operating without Rice and a regular tackle.
Kansas City's unbeaten start faces a practical test
The Chiefs enter the matchup at 5-0, giving them a strong start to the 2026 season. Their early success has included an offense averaging 28 points per game and 414 yards per game, according to NFL statistics ahead of Week 7.
Those numbers show why Kansas City remains dangerous even with injuries. However, the team's production will be tested if Seattle can disrupt Mahomes before receivers have time to get open and force the offense into difficult down-and-distance situations.

Kansas City's response will depend on more than one replacement player. The line must work as a unit, the coaching staff must adjust protection schemes, and the skill-position players need to help the offense stay on schedule.
Fun fact: Patrick Mahomes reached 20,000 career passing yards in just 67 regular-season games, setting an NFL record at the time.
