The Kansas City Chiefs are among several NFL teams mourning the passing of guard Jordan Devey , who committed suicide last week at the age of 38, according to reports from both ESPN and Pro Football Talk along with multiple other outlets.
Deveas part of his eight-year caree with the Chiefs from 2016-18, and he also had stints with four other NFL teams. Devey's career highlight came with the New England Patriots in 2013-14, as he won a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots in 2014.
Devey went undrafted in 2013 out of Memphis, and he signed with the Baltimore Ravens , but was released until he caught on with the Pats. According to Mike Florio of PFT , Devey spent 2015 with the San Francisco 49ers , 2016 through 2018 with the Chiefs, 2019 with the then-Oakland Raiders , and 2020 with the Buffalo Bills .
The lineman appeared in 44 regular-season games with 21 starts. He played in seven regular-season games for the Patriots in his Super Bowl-winning season, then 15 games with nine starts for the 49ers the following year.
He retired in 2021 after playing one game for the Bills in 2020.
A fundraising page for Devey's family has been started, with this message as part of it:
"Tragically, Jordan took his own life, leaving his family to navigate an incredibly difficult and heartbreaking time," the post read.
His wife, Linsey, said in a social media post that Devey died days before the couple's 15th anniversary.
Devey's mother, Leslie, told Fox 13 in Salt Lake City that the family believed that he suffered from CTE, according to the ESPN report, but that they won't be able to test for the neurodegenerative disease based on the way Devey died.
The lineman's passing is part of an ongoing situation involving multiple NFL players and athletes from other sports who are either believed to have been suffering from CTE or had a diagnosis that was confirmed post-mortem. Studies remain ongoing as data continues to be accumulated, but an autopsy is necessary to confirm CTE.
Devey's death is the latest example of a suicide where CTE is strongly suspected, and the actions of the lineman's death suggest that they'll be part of the effort to stop this from happening. The NFL has been part of these efforts to a limited extent, but there's obviously far more that could be done going forward.
Devey is survived by his parents, his wife and their four children.
