The Kansas City Chiefs have a penalty problem, and it may have just cost them a crucial AFC West victory.
Kansas City committed 11 penalties for 105 yards in Sunday's 28-24 loss to the Denver Broncos, including a false start that erased what would have been a game-winning touchdown.

The performance underscored a troubling season-long trend.
According to The Associated Press , the Chiefs have been penalized for 164 more yards than their opponents this season, the worst differential in the NFL.
The problem extends beyond 2026. Since Patrick Mahomes became Kansas City's starting quarterback in 2018, the Chiefs have accumulated a minus-1,100-yard penalty differential, the league's third-worst during that span.
Sunday's defeat provided a particularly painful example.
The Chiefs led the Denver Broncos 24-13 in the fourth quarter before surrendering two touchdowns and falling behind 28-24.

Mahomes subsequently drove Kansas City to Denver's 1-yard line, setting up a final opportunity to reclaim the lead.
On fourth down, Mahomes connected with Rashee Rice in the end zone as time expired.
But right tackle Jaylon Moore was flagged for a false start, nullifying the touchdown.
The Chiefs were pushed back five yards, and Mahomes was sacked by Malcolm Roach on the final play.
Reid disputed the false-start call after the game, saying he saw Moore move his head but did not believe he committed a penalty.
Kansas City finished with 52 accepted penalties for 464 yards through seven games, averaging more than 66 penalty yards per contest.

Coach Andy Reid acknowledged Monday that the mistakes were becoming costly.
"I don't like penalties. Do they upset me? They upset me," Reid said, according to the AP.
"You have to make sure you're not taking things away from yourself. The games are too close and too hard."
Tight end Travis Kelce, who was flagged for a pre-snap infraction Sunday, also acknowledged his frustration with procedural mistakes.
The Chiefs' 11 penalties against Denver included six defensive infractions totaling 70 yards, further complicating their efforts to protect the fourth-quarter lead.

The loss dropped Kansas City to 5-2 and moved Denver into first place in the AFC West.
With another divisional matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders still ahead this season, eliminating unnecessary penalties has become increasingly important.
For a Chiefs team accustomed to winning close games, Sunday's defeat demonstrated how quickly those mistakes can erase an otherwise productive performance.
