Chiefs sign an experienced quarterback to a reserve/future contract

The Kansas City Chiefs are adding depth to their quarterback room this offseason with the signing of a former fourth-round draft pick. Jake Haener has officially been signed to a reserve/future contract, bringing experience from his three seasons with the New Orleans Saints .

The deal was initially shared on social media by NFL Network's Mike Garafolo on Monday before being confirmed through the league's transactions log. Haener played college football for the Washington Huskies and Fresno State Bulldogs , earning First-team All-Mountain West honors in 2022.

Haener spent significant time on New Orleans ' practice squad last season after being cut at the end of training camp. He was lost in the shuffle amongst Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough on the Saints' quarterback depth chart. He was active for the final game of the 2025 season

The 127th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft notably served a six-game suspension in his rookie season for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. He saw action in 8 games in 2024, started 1 in a losing effort, and, in his career, tallied 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

The Chiefs are now preparing to shape their quarterback room, which still has Chris Ololadokun alongside a rehabbing Patrick Mahomes .
