Chiefs vs Broncos Preview: The Rematch
Chiefs Preview: So … They're Not Back?
Everyone assumed the Chiefs were "back" entering Week 7 — then they were dismantled in primetime by the Seahawks on Sunday Night Football, putting up just three points.
But you have to look at Kansas City's schedule leading up to that game.
The Chiefs played the easiest schedule in the NFL, beating up on dysfunctional teams like the Colts , Dolphins , Raiders , and Chargers — and they easily could have lost to the Colts and Raiders. Even the Chiefs' Week 1 win over the Broncos can be taken with a grain of salt considering the Denver defense put up a dismal — and atypical — tackling effort.
This Kansas City offense is now entirely predicated on Kenneth Walker and the rushing attack. If you can shut him down and get Patrick Mahomes into third-and-long, you have a huge advantage, especially with Kansas City dealing with tackle and receiver injuries .
Vance Joseph's defense has historically given Mahomes fits.
In Mahomes' 153 career starts, his five starts against the Broncos all rank in the bottom half of his career passer rating. Of the 35 games where Mahomes averaged under 6.5 yards per attempt, three were against Denver. Of the 40 games where he posted under a 46% pass success rate , four were against Denver.
Broncos Preview: The Revenge Game
This is a phenomenal situational spot for the Broncos . They are at home, facing a division rival, and have revenge on their minds after an embarrassing opening-season loss where they had one of the worst tackling performances in NFL history.
I also love the altitude advantage here. Kickers are a perfect 13-for-13 against Kansas City this year, and playing in the Mile High air only helps.
The Chiefs defense allows 6.6 plays per drive (tied for third-most), while the Broncos offense averages a league-low 5.3 plays per drive.
Something has to give, and I am betting on Denver's offense to sustain drives at home and keep this within the number.
Chiefs vs Broncos Spread Pick, Analysis
We are getting a home underdog with serious a motivational edge and a renowned defensive coordinator in Vance Joseph who knows how to frustrate Patrick Mahomes.
Trending:Mahomes is just 2-7-1 against the spread (ATS) in his last 10 road starts in the AFC West. Meanwhile, the Broncos are a wildly profitable 25-12 ATS as a home underdog when their record sits above .500.
All signs seem to point toward Denver.
Pick: Broncos +1.5 (-110)
