Chivas put on a composed display against Pumas
Some victories are explained by the scoreline, and others find their true dimension in the way they are built. Chivas' 3-0 win over Pumas on Matchday 8 of the Apertura 2026 belongs to the second category. Guadalajara not only earned its second straight 3-0 victory, but did so through a display of control that showed itself for virtually the entire match: it dictated the tempo, found spaces to move forward, and above all managed to neutralize the main strengths of an opponent with the individual quality to hurt in transition.
A start that set the toneThe opening three minutes were a statement of intent. Chivas came out at a very high tempo, moving the ball quickly and looking for different spaces and seams in Pumas' defensive structure.

The intention was clear: move the back line, find gaps between the center backs, and attack those areas with players capable of appearing at different heights. The reward came in just the 3rd minute, when Santiago Sandovalfound space between the center backs and made the most of one of the first big chances of the match to make it 1-0. The goal was the result of an idea Guadalajara stuck with for much of the night: attacking the space between center backs and taking advantage of the mobility of its attacking players.
After the goal, the match slowed slightly, but it never changed hands. Chivas knew how to manage the flow of the game, choosing when to speed up and when to slow the circulation down. At the same time, it was especially careful in possession losses, a key factor against a team like Pumas, whose individual quality could turn any recovery into a dangerous transition.
The rojiblanco press also helped keep the match from getting away: when it lost the ball, Guadalajara reacted quickly to try to win it back or, failing that, reorganize and prevent the university side from finding space to run into. Pumas had the ball at certain moments, but never managed to take control of the match.
Combinations through the middle to find the secondThe second half brought some adjustments that helped Chivas flow more naturally again, and one of the characteristics that has most defined the team showed up once more: its ability to combine through the middle. The move for the 2-0 is a perfect example. A great combination between Sepúlvedaand Sandovalallowed them to progress and once again find a seam in the university side's structure.

Chivas has shown throughout this tournament that it can use virtually three forwards with different traits and movements: Sandoval, Ricardo Marínand Sepúlveda. The key is not only who occupies each position, but how they relate to one another: one pins defenders back, another drops deeper, and another attacks the space. That movement forces the center backs to make decisions constantly and opens spaces between the lines. Against Pumas, Guadalajara once again exploited that quality to build the second goal and extend a lead that, based on the run of play, was beginning to feel increasingly solid.
Efraín Álvarez , decisive once againThe third goal once again highlighted the value of the pieces Gabriel Militohas used off the bench. Efraín, who had already been decisive against Atlético de San Luis when he came on to help the team maintain control of the match, made an immediate impact again. This time, his contribution came in the final third, where he found the final pass to take a direct role in the build-up to the third goal and put the match away.
His intervention once again confirmed the importance of having alternatives capable of changing the game from different areas. Guadalajara did not need to lose its shape to chase the third; it found it while maintaining its structure, its combinations, and its game plan.
The final half hour: a masterclass in closing out the matchPerhaps that was Guadalajara's greatest display of maturity. With the score at 3-0, Chivas did not turn the match into a back-and-forth exchange of blows. It did exactly the opposite: it protected the ball, picked its passes well, avoided unnecessary risks, advanced into the opposition half, and, when necessary, started moves over again from the back.

The final half hour was a demonstration of how to close out a match through possession and not only through sitting deep. Pumas needed to regain ground, but Guadalajara gave it virtually no opportunities to do so. Every long rojiblanco spell of possession meant less time for the university side to run and exploit its individual quality. The ball stopped being only a tool for attack and also became a defensive mechanism. Having the ball was, in that stretch, the best way to defend the lead.
Milito's stampThe 3-0 win over Pumas leaves several points worth highlighting: the attacking power, the second consecutive rout, the combinations through the middle, the involvement of the players who came off the bench, and the ruthlessness to capitalize on key moments. But above all, one feeling remains: Chivas had the match under control.
From those first three minutes of intensity to the final minutes of intelligent possession, Guadalajara knew how to read every scenario the match presented. And doing it against Pumas carries special value. The university side has players capable of creating danger in transition and solving situations through individual quality, but Chivas managed to reduce those chances to a minimum, controlled its turnovers, pressed when appropriate, and handled the ball with decision-making that was practically optimal.
That is one of the great merits of Gabriel Milito'sprocess since arriving at the Rebaño : making the team depend not only on its ability to attack, but also on its ability to dominate matches by controlling every phase of the game. Against Pumas, Guadalajara showed it again. The 3-0 was emphatic; the display of control, even more so.
