Oxford, Miss. - Ole Miss head coach Chris Beard is not afraid to engage in a little confrontation for his team, especially when it comes from players who are willing to compete.
Given the demands of an SEC season, Ole Miss is building a strong physical foundation to dominate this season.
Following the Rebels' 99-58 season-opening victory over Alcorn State on Monday night, Beard made it clear that his roster's physicality and aggression displayed by his roster were no coincidence.

In fact, that competitive mentality has been developing behind closed doors throughout the offseason, occasionally pushing practices to the brink of physical altercations.
"We've had some good, you know, damn near fistfights in practice," Beard said. "As long as it's in the heat of competition, that's what playing at this level is all about."
That intensity translated directly onto the court Monday, with the Rebels forcing 26 turnovers and recording 14 steals in a dominant opening-night performance.
While the 41-point victory offered plenty of encouraging signs offensively, it was Ole Miss' willingness to pressure the ball and disrupt Alcorn State's offense that stood out.
Beard has made defensive aggression a priority for his program, and Monday's performance offered an early indication that his players are buying into that approach.
"We tried to cause a lot of turnovers tonight," Beard said. "We threw some punches on defense with some trapping, things like that. I think our full-court pressure kind of set the tone."
The Rebels turned those turnovers into 39 points, repeatedly capitalizing on Alcorn State's mistakes to create opportunities in transition.
For Beard, however, the aggressiveness extends beyond forcing turnovers. It is about establishing a mentality that can carry Ole Miss through the challenges of an SEC schedule.
"I love coaching alphas," Beard said. "I'd much rather pause guys, turn them down a little bit, than have to turn them up."
That mentality was apparent in several players Monday, including Roman Siulepa, whose physical approach occasionally brought some extra tension to the floor.
Beard acknowledged that his players must understand the difference between playing with an edge and allowing their emotions to interfere with the game.
"Roman's got his nose in a fight and maybe said the wrong words, so we can clean all that stuff up," Beard said.
Still, the third-year Ole Miss head coach would rather manage an overly aggressive roster than spend the season searching for ways to motivate one lacking intensity.
While the Rebels' offensive production grabbed attention, Beard emphasized that establishing individual defensive identities will be essential to the team's development.
Senior guard Ilias Kamardine provided an early example of that philosophy, recording four steals against Alcorn State.
Beard pointed to Kamardine's experience, basketball IQ and physical development as factors that could make him an important piece of the Rebels' defensive approach.
The returning guard added approximately eight to 10 pounds during the offseason, giving him additional strength to complement his length.
"I think everybody has kind of an offensive identity, but the best players have defensive identities," Beard said.
That philosophy also resonated with the players.
Forward Santiago Trouet explained that the Rebels were dissatisfied with their defensive performance in their previous exhibition and made a concerted effort to address those shortcomings before the regular-season opener.
"We wanted that to be our identity on the team, defense, win off our defense," Trouet said.
The Rebels' defensive intensity was complemented by an efficient offensive performance, with Budd Clark leading the team with 17 points and seven assists. Patton Pinkins added 16 points, while Trouet contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Yet Beard's emphasis remained on the defensive end, where Ole Miss demonstrated an ability to dictate possessions rather than simply react to its opponent.
"Defense is not just guarding them until they shoot and hoping they miss," Beard said. "It's trying to get the ball before they shoot."
Of course, forcing 26 turnovers against Alcorn State does not guarantee similar results against the physicality and talent Ole Miss will face in conference play. The Rebels will face more experienced backcourts and opponents better equipped to handle their pressure as the season progresses.
But for a program looking to establish its identity early, Monday's performance offered a foundation to build upon.
