- Chris Jones’ Passion Is Showing Up Where FSU Needs It Most

There are plenty of ways to measure what linebacker Chris Jones has given the Florida State Seminoles defense this season.
There are tackles and sacks. There are pressures and stops. There are coaches assessments where Jones has been at his best and where they see room for growth.

Then there are moments that explain why head coach Mike Norvell values the linebacker beyond the stat sheet.
Ahead of Florida State's matchup with Louisville, Norvell was asked Monday about Jones' visible emotion before a third down and the example he has set for the Seminoles.
"Chris has so much passion, so much desire," Norvell said. "You watch how he runs through the door every day coming into practice. He comes with purpose."
That passion was matched by production in Florida State's 38-7 win over Virginia.
Jones finished with six tackles, including four solo stops, 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hurries. He was part of a dominant defensive effort that held Virginia to 205 total yards and only 37 rushing yards on 40 attempts. The Cavaliers were also 0-for-4 on fourth down.

One of those fourth-down stops captured exactly what Norvell sees in Jones.
"The fourth-down play, the fourth-and-one, I think that's one of the plays of the game, if not the play of the game," Norvell said. "Just the reaction, how fast he triggered to be able to get the guy down for a TFL. That was a monumental moment for us in that game."
It was the type of instinctive, downhill play Florida State needs from its linebackers, and the underlying numbers show Jones is becoming increasingly disruptive.
According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Jones has played 214 defensive snaps this season, including 99 against the run, 28 as a pass rusher and 87 in coverage. His overall defensive grade sits at 60.3, but his strongest work has come in the areas most associated with playing aggressively near the line of scrimmage.

Jones owns a 72.4 run-defense grade and a 76.7 pass-rush grade. PFF credits him with eight total pressures (one sack, five quarterback hits and two hurries) despite only 28 pass-rush snaps.
Against Virginia, that impact jumped off the screen. Jones generated four pressures on just four pass-rush snaps, according to PFF, earning a 75.7 pass-rush grade and 74.8 run-defense grade.
There are still inconsistencies. PFF did assess that Jones had two missed tackles against Virginia. Norvell didn't ignore that side of Jones' development, either.
"He's also somebody that, in the negative plays he's had, it's the investment, it's the work, it's trying to make sure he's doing everything not just for himself, but for this football team to be better," Norvell said.

That may be the more important part of Jones' emergence.
Florida State doesn't simply need productive defenders. It needs players whose energy becomes contagious, particularly as the Seminoles move deeper into ACC play.
"I think that rubs off across the board because you feel his investment into himself and into others," Norvell said. "The ownership that he brings is really impressive."
Jones' numbers say he is becoming a disruptive piece of Florida State's defense.
His coach sees something more: a player helping establish how that defense wants to play.
