Chris Paul clarified the intent behind a viral Instagram post that drew attention following the Los Angeles Clippers ’ Play-In Tournament exit, saying it had nothing to do with the team’s elimination.

Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show on Friday, the veteran guard explained that the “funeral” meme he shared on April 16 was tied to a family card game, not the Clippers’ 126–121 loss to the Golden State Warriors the day before, which ended their postseason hopes.

“I was just playing a card game with my family, man,” Paul said. “We was playing… and I won the card game.”

The timing of the post led to speculation online, as it came less than 24 hours after the Clippers were knocked out of the Play-In Tournament. Some interpreted the meme as a reaction to the loss or a broader commentary on the team’s season.

Paul dismissed that notion, reiterating that the post was unrelated to basketball and instead reflected a moment from his time at home.

“We play Onze every night with my family, you know what I mean, so [I] got them,” he said. “It was over for them.”
