A familiar face could find himself one play away from taking over Clemson 's offense when the Tigers welcome
North Carolina to Death Valley on Saturday.Trent Pearman, a former walk-on with limited game experience, could move into the No. 2 quarterback role after Christopher Vizzina 's injury status took a turn for the worse.
Vizzina was considered probable earlier in the week, but Friday's ACC injury update moved him to questionable because of an arm issue. The designation leaves his availability uncertain as Clemson prepares for its conference home opener. It's another development in a quarterback room that has already undergone significant changes this season.
Vizzina opened the year as the Tigers ' starter before sharing the top spot with freshman Tait Reynolds for the Georgia Southern matchup. During that game, he experienced numbness in his non-throwing arm, according to head coach Dabo Swinney.
His production through two appearances includes 102 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions on 14-of-23 passing.Reynolds has since taken over the starting role, leaving Pearman as the likely next man up if Vizzina cannot go.Pearman has completed four passes for 43 yards across six career appearances, including a brief outing against the Tar Heels last season. He has also rushed for 17 yards on five carries.
North Carolina is dealing with an injury question of its own. Melkhart Abou Jaoude, a defensive lineman with 11.5 sacks over the past two seasons, remains questionable. The Tigers enter Saturday's noon ESPN matchup as three-point favorites, but their quarterback depth remains unsettled heading into kickoff.
