Rich Paul said LeBron James ' decision would largely depend on his happiness. Money evidently played no role in it. That statement also did not mean just playing a season or two in a familiar environment or with friends (read: Draymond Green ). James' choice revolved around winning a fifth championship. But again, this raises an important question: How much longer will LeBron continue?
The King signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers that includes a player option. Continuing with the train of thought, James' close friend, Richard Jefferson , shared his opinion and linked that situation to a certain San Antonio Spurs legend.
" Tim Duncan signed a two-year deal and played one," Jefferson said on the Road Trippin' Show . "Just to eliminate the BS. I'm just saying there is a school of thought. Let's play fantasy land. If Philly were to have a championship run and win a championship, that would be how I would see him going out, calling it a day."
In simple terms, if the Sixers win a title next season, LeBron might not continue any further. Here's what Duncan had done. He extended his stay with the San Antonio Spurs in 2015 with a two-year, $10.8 million deal that included a player option. Importantly, he chose loyalty over a new destination and more money, playing one final season before retiring in July 2016. After 19 years in the NBA, the Spurs legend ended his career on his own terms.
Meanwhile, the 76ers are going all in. They are still making additional moves to strengthen their roster. LeBron's former LA teammate, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope , is also expected to join the team. But that requires the front office to make room on the roster. They've reportedly done so by trading Johni Broome for cash. That move relatively brings the 76ers below both the first and second aprons.
Jefferson continued that he's never seen a player like LeBron "from his career, from his ability, from his longevity" point of view. Yet, he didn't hide his skepticism. While Philly's short-term plans appear clear, the team has faced internal challenges over the past 5 to 7 years, including accountability issues. The fanbase is well aware of Joel Embiid 's fitness setbacks, and it didn't help when a 2024 headline involving Tyrese Maxey and him emerged.
"Maxey challenged Embiid to be on time to team activities, calling out the 2022-23 league MVP about being late 'for everything' and how it impacts the locker room, from other players to the coaching staff," according to an ESPN report. However, Maxey's on-court growth as a leader appears to have changed the dynamic for the better, giving the franchise a stronger foundation. It was visible when Philly went against the odds and beat the Boston Celtics last season.
Jefferson hinted at past locker room issues and noted that James brings leadership experience beyond the hardwood.
"I think we greatly underestimate LeBron as a culture builder, as a person who will establish, 'Hey, this is what we're doing. This is what we're building,'" Jefferson said. "He's won a championship everywhere he's gone in his second year. Just remember that when he signs a two-year deal."
Even though LeBron has garnered his fair share of haters over the years, the fact that he has won championships with all his teams is undeniable. Now, James' decision to choose Philly revolved around their potential to challenge for a ring. Further, that team also needed a new locker room presence who could take control. While some may think that Jaylen Brown was brought in for the same reason, there's been enough off-court controversy surrounding him for months.
Here's the context that matters. Long before LeBron made his decision to leave LA, there were hints that he'd not be returning. Publicly, the 41-year-old always stood by Luka Doncic , who was traded in as the new face of the franchise. LeBron even accepted playing third fiddle in the attack behind the Slovenian and Reaves . However, a March incident reportedly changed things after the Lakers pulled off an impressive 127-113 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers .
That was James' 1,229th career win, moving past Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Doncic and Rui Hachimura even reached personal milestones of 15,000 and 5,000 points, respectively, that night. When everyone returned to the locker room after the game, GM Rob Pelinka addressed the team with pride, but instead of presenting the game ball to either of the three LA kingpins, Pelinka honored JJ Redick , who had also won his 100th game as a head coach.
Sources told ESPN that James had no issue with Redick, but saw Pelinka's priority at that moment as another example of the LA team "taking him for granted." He was furious about what had happened, and even though he repeatedly denied having a feud with Jeanie Buss or the top brass, this situation proved quite telling…
Currently, there's little to suggest that James has made a wrong decision. Multiple teams, including the Golden State Warriors , would've discussed their projects with Rich Paul and Co., and, from a team dynamic and sporting perspective, the 76ers made the most sense, which is why LeBron specifically took it. He is on an $8 million salary, so it is pretty clear that there was no financial consideration in his decision-making.
"I don't believe legacy matters," LeBron James ' friend, Richard Jefferson, said.
According to him, chasing legacy alone should not drive a player's decisions. For Jefferson, the real fuel is passion and the hunger to compete, especially at 40-plus. He believes that people ultimately shape a player's legacy through their opinions and perceptions. However, the true motivation comes from a genuine passion for basketball. Therefore, without that love for the game, maintaining the drive to perform at an elite level becomes much harder.
"One of the freest things is saying, 'I'm going to do what I want, and I don't give a f*** what other people think about me.' End of the story," Jefferson concluded.
Evidently, James, during his final interview as a Lakers player, spoke about his hustle and whether showing up early for practice and following the process would still matter to him. He also laid out the ground rules, saying he'd obviously keep his family's opinion at the forefront.
In the end, yes, the 41-year-old still trusts his process, that's why he signed with the 76ers . And according to James' pal, with whom he recently went on vacation , he shouldn't worry about his legacy anymore. What matters now is his tenure. Will James choose the Duncan route, or will he opt for the player option?
