- College football: Holy Cross scores 34 unanswered to beat Bucknell
WORCESTER, Mass. — Ty Curran caught two scoring passes during a 34-point barrage that Holy Cross hung on Bucknell in a Patriot League game Saturday.
The Crusaders answered an early field goal with a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, and never looked back in their 34-3 win over the Bison on Homecoming at Fitton Field.
Joseph Williams rushed for 144 yards and a touchdown to lead Holy Cross, which improved to 3-5 overall (3-2 Patriot).
Bucknell (1-7, 0-5) committed three turnovers — all interceptions, including one that was returned 36 yards for a TD by the Crusaders' Chisom Onwuzurigbo that made it 13-3 in the first quarter.
It was the Bison's fifth consecutive loss. They slipped to 1-4 in road games.
Brandon Biagiarelli led Bucknell with 12 tackles (six solo) with a half-sack he shared with Nate Olson. Lucas Rost picked off a pass for the Bison.
Chris Dietrich helped Bucknell to back-to-back first downs on the game-opening drive. After Michael Cadden ran for 10 yards, Dietrich completed a 33-yard pass to Owen Garwood to the Holy Cross 26. Dietrich then found Cadden for 8 yards, and Sam Milligan for 4 more to set up Juan Garanton's 28-yard field goal at the 10:14 mark.
The Crusaders answered with the help of a personal foul penalty that moved the ball across midfield. Williams took the ball on the next play 47 yards for a touchdown.
Bucknell punted, and Holy Cross marched 54 yards to the Bison 24 where Owen Saraceno missed a 42-yard field goal try. Less than two minutes later, Onwuzurigbo picked a Dietrich pass and took it back for a 10-point lead with 14 seconds to play in the quarter.
Rost's interception with 7:33 to play in the first half was followed by the Crusaders' Tyler Georgs picking off Dietrich on a play from near midfield. Lynch hit Curran for a 35-yard score on the next snap for a 20-3 lead that stood up at halftime.
Holy Cross scored one touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters.
Curran's second TD catch — an 8-yarder from Lynch — made it 27-3. Lynch threw for just 110 yards on 11-of-20 passing.
The Crusaders' Jack Croce ran for a 15-yard score with 8:29 to play.
Cadden, a junior, had his first 100-yard rushing game for Bucknell with 102 yards on 26 carries. He also caught three passes for 36 yards.
Milligan caught three balls for 46 yards for the Bison.
Bucknell plays at league-leading Lehigh (6-1, 4-0) at noon Saturday.
