About Our Ads

College football has crowned a national champion for more than 150 years, and for most of that history nobody could agree on who it was. The sport spent decades without a playoff, without a title game, and often without a single authority willing to say one team stood above the rest. Sportswriters voted. Coaches voted. Mathematicians ran their own systems. Programs claimed trophies that other programs claimed right back. Only recently has the whole thing been settled where it belongs, on the field.

That messiness is the story. A list of college football national champions is really four lists stacked on top of each other: the retroactive picks from the sport's first 60 years, the wire-service poll era that ran from the 1930s into the 1990s, the Bowl Championship Series that tried to force a No. 1 versus No. 2 matchup, and the College Football Playoff that finally built a bracket. Read the full record and you get every winner, but you also get the arguments, the split titles, and the programs that piled up wins for a century and never got to hang the banner.

Here is the complete picture, era by era, plus the answers to the questions fans actually ask: who has won the most, who won back to back, whose title got taken away, and which blue-blood program has still never won a thing.

The Most Recent National Champions

Indiana won the 2025 national championship, beating Miami 27-21 on January 19, 2026, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. It was the first national title in Indiana history, and the Hoosiers earned it the hard way, finishing a perfect 16-0 under head coach Curt Cignetti. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza was named the title game's Offensive MVP after completing 16 of 27 passes for 186 yards and adding a rushing touchdown, and defensive back Jamari Sharpe sealed the win with an interception of Miami's Carson Beck inside the final minute. Indiana's 16-0 finish put the Hoosiers in company almost nobody keeps: only 1894 Yale and 2019 North Dakota State had ever gone 16-0 in Division I football. The victory also handed the Big Ten its third straight playoff championship.

The year before, Ohio State claimed the 2024 title with a 34-23 win over Notre Dame, the first championship decided under the expanded 12-team playoff. The Buckeyes limped into that bracket as the No. 8 seed after losing to Michigan in the regular season, then ran the table, beating Tennessee, top-seeded Oregon, Texas, and finally Notre Dame. Quarterback Will Howard went 17 of 21 for 231 yards and two scores, and freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith broke the game open late. It was Ohio State's ninth national championship and its first in a decade.

Two champions, two very different paths. Ohio State was a preseason favorite that survived a stumble. Indiana was a program that had won nothing in more than a century of trying. Both stories only exist because the sport finally built a system where a team can prove it on the field rather than wait for a poll to bless it.

How a National Champion Gets Crowned

To read the list correctly, you have to know that "national champion" has meant four different things across college football history.

For the sport's first six decades, there was no championship at all, at least not one awarded at the time. Champions from before the mid-1930s were selected retroactively by researchers and mathematical systems. Names like the Dickinson System, the Helms Athletic Foundation, and historian Parke Davis, whose research assigned titles going back to 1869, filled in the record long after the games were played. That is why the earliest champions are Ivy League schools: Princeton, Yale, and Harvard dominated when they were essentially the entire sport.

The poll era began in 1936, when the Associated Press started surveying sportswriters and naming a No. 1. The first AP poll went out to 35 writers on October 20, 1936, and crowned Minnesota at season's end. A coaches poll, run first by United Press and later by USA Today, joined in 1950. For the next half-century those two polls were the closest thing to an official championship, and when they disagreed, the sport simply had two champions. The NCAA still treats a title as a recognized national championship if any one of five major selectors picked that team, a group that from 1950 forward includes the AP, the coaches, the Football Writers Association of America, and the National Football Foundation.

The Bowl Championship Series arrived in 1998 to fix the biggest flaw in the poll era: the two best teams often never played each other because the bowls locked in matchups by conference tie-in. The BCS combined human polls with computer rankings to force a single No. 1 versus No. 2 title game. It worked more often than not, but it never stopped generating controversy over who deserved the two spots.

The College Football Playoff replaced the BCS after the 2013 season. A 13-member selection committee seeded a four-team bracket from 2014 through 2023, then the field grew to 12 teams for the 2024 season. For the first time in the sport's history, a champion now has to win multiple games against the best competition to claim the crown. The list below runs newest to oldest through the modern eras, then steps back into the polls and the retroactive years.

College Football National Champions by Year: The Playoff Era

The playoff era produced its first champion in the 2014 season and expanded to a 12-team bracket a decade later. These are the only national titles in college football history won entirely through a bracket.

2025 — Indiana (16-0), beat Miami 27-21
2024 — Ohio State (14-2), beat Notre Dame 34-23, first 12-team playoff
2023 — Michigan (15-0), beat Washington
2022 — Georgia (15-0), beat TCU
2021 — Georgia (14-1), beat Alabama
2020 — Alabama (13-0), beat Ohio State
2019 — LSU (15-0), beat Clemson
2018 — Clemson (15-0), beat Alabama
2017 — Alabama (13-1), beat Georgia
2016 — Clemson (14-1), beat Alabama
2015 — Alabama (14-1), beat Clemson
2014 — Ohio State (14-1), beat Oregon, first playoff champion

The four-team era belonged to a small circle. Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, and Michigan split every title from 2014 through 2023, and the SEC and its rivals turned the championship into a heavyweight rematch series. Then the 12-team format cracked it open immediately. Ohio State won as a No. 8 seed in 2024, and Indiana, a program that had never sniffed a title, won it all in 2025.

The BCS Era Champions

From 1998 through the 2013 season, the Bowl Championship Series staged a single title game between the top two teams in its rankings. The system decided 16 champions and argued about most of them.

2013 — Florida State (14-0), beat Auburn
2012 — Alabama (13-1), beat Notre Dame
2011 — Alabama (12-1), beat LSU
2010 — Auburn (14-0), beat Oregon
2009 — Alabama (14-0), beat Texas
2008 — Florida (13-1), beat Oklahoma
2007 — LSU (12-2), beat Ohio State
2006 — Florida (13-1), beat Ohio State
2005 — Texas (13-0), beat USC
2004 — USC (12-1), later vacated
2003 — LSU (BCS) and USC (AP), a split title
2002 — Ohio State (14-0), beat Miami in double overtime
2001 — Miami (12-0), beat Nebraska
2000 — Oklahoma (13-0), beat Florida State
1999 — Florida State (12-0), beat Virginia Tech
1998 — Tennessee (13-0), beat Florida State, first BCS champion

The BCS era gave Alabama the start of its dynasty, gave Texas one of the great title games in the 2005 Rose Bowl over USC, and gave the sport its clearest argument for a playoff. Even a system built to produce one champion managed to produce two in 2003, when LSU won the BCS title game while USC finished No. 1 in the AP poll and refused to concede the crown.

The Poll Era and the Split-Title Problem

Before the BCS forced a title game, the champion was whoever the polls said it was, and the polls did not always agree. The AP writers and the coaches named different No. 1 teams roughly a dozen times, leaving the sport with two legitimate champions in the same season. A few of the notable splits:

1990 — Colorado (AP) and Georgia Tech (coaches)
1991 — Miami (AP) and Washington (coaches)
1997 — Michigan (AP) and Nebraska (coaches)

The 1997 split is the one fans still bring up, because it was the last straw. Michigan finished the season No. 1 in the AP poll after a Rose Bowl win, while Nebraska, in Tom Osborne's final season, took the coaches' crown. Neither team could beat the other because they never played, and the sport's inability to settle it directly fueled the creation of the BCS the very next season.

During the BCS

The poll era stretches back to Minnesota's first AP title in 1936 and covers the game's postwar golden age: Notre Dame under Frank Leahy and later Ara Parseghian, Oklahoma's record 47-game winning streak in the 1950s, Alabama under Bear Bryant, Nebraska's back-to-back run in the mid-1990s. It is the longest single stretch of the championship record and the one where "national champion" most often meant "the team most voters liked best," bowl result permitting.

Before the Polls: The Retroactive Champions

Everything before 1936 was assigned after the fact. When researchers went back and named champions for the sport's first six decades, they handed most of the trophies to the schools that were college football in the 1800s and early 1900s. Princeton and Yale combined for more than 30 recognized titles between them, nearly all before 1930, with Harvard close behind. Rutgers and Princeton even share the very first one: the two schools played the first intercollegiate football game in 1869, split their two meetings, and each received a partial share of the retroactive 1869 championship.

These early titles are real in the sense that the NCAA recognizes them, but they were never won in a national competition. They reflect a time when a dozen Northeastern schools formed the entire universe of the sport. That context matters enormously when you try to answer the question everyone actually wants answered.

Which School Has Won the Most National Championships?

This is where the record gets slippery, because the honest answer depends on which era you count.

If you count everything the NCAA recognizes, all the way back to 1869, Yale leads with 18 national championships, though the Bulldogs' last one came in 1927. Alabama sits second with 16, Princeton third with 15, and Notre Dame fourth with 13. That list rewards the programs that dominated the sport's first 60 years, when the Ivy League was the whole show.

If you count only the modern game, the picture sharpens. In the AP poll era, from 1936 to today, Alabama has won an NCAA-record 13 national championships, far more than anyone else. Notre Dame and Ohio State are tied for second in the poll era with nine apiece. By that measure, the measure most fans mean when they argue about it, Alabama is the sport's dominant program and it is not especially close.

There is a further wrinkle worth knowing. Programs "claim" titles, and the claims do not always match what independent selectors recognized. Alabama officially claims as many as 18 championships, a couple more than the 16 usually credited to it. Ohio State's nine recognized titles include the 1961 and 1970 seasons, when the Buckeyes were not the AP or coaches champion, so some accountings list only seven. The number you see depends on whether you are reading the school's media guide or a neutral record book. When a program says it has more titles than a rival acknowledges, both sides are usually telling a version of the truth.

The Most National Titles by Program

Here is the all-time recognized leaderboard, the figure that counts every era. Read it alongside the AP-era note above, because the ranking changes sharply once you drop the pre-1936 seasons.

Yale — 18 (all before 1928)
Alabama — 16 recognized, 13 in the AP poll era, the modern record
Princeton — 15 (all before 1923)
Notre Dame — 13
Michigan — 10, including the 1997 AP title and the 2023 playoff crown
Ohio State — 9, including 2014 and 2024
USC — 9, including a share of 2003 and the vacated 2004 title
Harvard — 8 (all before 1920)
Oklahoma — 7
Minnesota — 6, including the first AP title in 1936

The split screen is the whole point. The top of the all-time list is an Ivy League monument to the 1800s. The top of the modern list is Alabama, with Notre Dame and Ohio State chasing. Depending on which question you are answering, the "winningest" program in college football is either a school that has not won since the Coolidge administration or the one that ruled the 2010s.

Repeat and Back-to-Back Champions

Winning it once is hard. Winning it twice in a row is the mark of a true dynasty, and only 14 programs can claim back-to-back national titles since the AP began naming champions in 1936.

Alabama owns more strings of consecutive titles than anyone in the poll era, a byproduct of the Bryant years and the Nick Saban dynasty that produced the 2011 and 2012 repeat. Nebraska and Oklahoma are the only other programs to go back-to-back more than once in that era. Nebraska's 1994 and 1995 teams under Tom Osborne are among the most dominant repeat champions ever, with the 1995 squad routinely ranked among the best in history.

In the playoff era, only one team has repeated: Georgia, which won the 2021 and 2022 titles and blew out TCU 65-7 in the second one. That is the largest margin in the history of the sport's championship game. USC won the 2003 and 2004 titles for a back-to-back that carries an asterisk, since the 2004 crown was later vacated, and the Trojans claim the 2003 title despite not even playing in that season's designated BCS championship game, having finished No. 1 in the AP poll after a Rose Bowl win.

When Two Teams Both Claimed the Title

The split national championship is a relic of the poll era that younger fans sometimes do not believe is real. Because the AP and coaches polls were independent, a season could end with each naming a different No. 1, and both teams would celebrate a legitimate championship.

It happened often enough to shape the record. Beyond the 1990, 1991, and 1997 splits, the polls diverged repeatedly through the middle of the 20th century, sending co-champions home from the same season. The 2003 season produced the last true split, LSU by the BCS formula and USC by the writers, and that outcome is exactly what the eventual playoff was built to prevent. Once a bracket decides it on the field, there is no second champion to crown.

Vacated and Disputed Titles

Not every championship on the books stayed there. USC's 2004 title, won with a 55-19 rout of Oklahoma, was later vacated in the wake of NCAA violations tied to running back Reggie Bush, one of the rare cases of a national championship being formally stripped. The crystal football that goes to the BCS or playoff winner was surrendered.

Disputes short of vacating are more common. Ohio State's 1961 and 1970 titles came from selectors other than the AP and coaches polls, which is why the Buckeyes' recognized total sits at nine for some and seven for others. Auburn's undefeated 2004 team, left out of the BCS title game entirely, has since been recognized by the school itself as a national champion for that season. These fights are the natural residue of a sport that spent most of its life without a single, binding way to name a winner.

The Best Programs That Never Won a Title

For all the banners, some of the winningest programs in college football history have never won a recognized national championship, and their fans will tell you about it.

West Virginia holds the unhappy record: no program has more all-time wins without a national title. Their best shot came in 2007, when they entered the final week ranked No. 2 before an upset loss to rival Pitt ended the dream. Virginia Tech is close behind, ranking among the top 30 programs in all-time wins yet still empty-handed despite reaching the 1999 BCS title game with Michael Vick and losing to Florida State. Wisconsin ranks third among title-less programs in total victories.

The list runs deep. North Carolina, one of the sport's oldest programs, has eight conference titles but no national crown. Utah has been one of the more successful programs of the 21st century, with a long run of winning seasons and no title to show for it. Oregon reached two championship games, the 2010 BCS title game and the 2014 playoff final, and lost both. A national championship remains the one line these programs cannot add to the résumé, no matter how many wins pile up.

The 12-Team Playoff Changes the Math

The expansion to 12 teams for the 2024 season did more than add games. It changed who can win. Under the four-team format, the championship stayed locked among a handful of blue bloods for a decade. The very first 12-team bracket sent a No. 8 seed, Ohio State, all the way to the title, and the second one produced Indiana, a first-time champion from a program with the longest odds imaginable.

That is the direction the sport has always been pointed, from retroactive picks to polls to the BCS to a real bracket: toward settling the argument on the field and toward letting more than a handful of programs into the conversation. The list of national champions is still overwhelmingly a story of a few dynasties, Yale and Princeton in the beginning, Notre Dame and Oklahoma in the middle, Alabama in the modern age. But for the first time, the newest names on it got there by winning four straight games against the best in the country, with nobody's vote required.

College Football Championship Questions Fans Still Ask

Which college football team went 16-0?

The 2025 Indiana Hoosiersbecame the first modern FBS team to finish a season 16-0, winning the national championship under Curt Cignetti. Historically, the only other Division I programs to hit a 16-0 record are 1894 Yaleand 2019 North Dakota State(FCS).

Why do college football teams have different national title counts?

The variance comes down to claimed titles vs. recognized titles. Before the playoff era, independent selectors (like the AP Poll or computer models) often chose different winners. Programs frequently claim titles awarded by minor selectors, whereas neutral record books only count major consensus selectors.

Has an undefeated FBS team ever been left out of the national championship game?

Yes. During the bowl and BCS eras, multiple undefeated teams were denied a chance to play for the title due to voting structures. A premier modern example is 2004 Auburn, which finished a perfect 13-0 but was entirely left out of the BCS National Championship Game in favor of USC and Oklahoma.
