The Detroit Tigers guaranteed Colt Keith $28.6 million before he played a Major League game because they believed his bat would become a fixture in their lineup. Nearly three seasons later, one casual remark exposed how much uncertainty still surrounds that investment.
Keith discussed facing former teammate Tarik Skubal before Friday's series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He acknowledged the unusual matchup, then added a revealing detail about his expected role.
"I probably won't be in the lineup," Keith said, according to The Detroit News' Chris McCosky. "I haven't played against a lefty since like 2024."
The comment was delivered with a laugh, but it identified an important question for Detroit: Does Keith project as an everyday cornerstone or a player whose value depends heavily on the opposing pitcher?

Keith is batting .264/.323/.412 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs in 108 games, according to his official MLB profile . Those numbers represent useful production, and his .735 OPS is the best mark of his three Major League seasons.
His recent form also offers encouragement. Keith has produced a .304/.402/.468 line over his past 30 games despite going hitless in his last three appearances. Detroit has received exactly the kind of patient, gap-to-gap offense it envisioned when it extended him.
Still, his usage against left-handed pitching limits his ceiling. A player does not need perfect platoon splits to justify a regular role, but Detroit must learn whether Keith can handle enough lefties to remain in the lineup when matchups become difficult.
The contract makes that evaluation more important. MLB .com reported that Keith is guaranteed $28,642,500 through 2029, with club options covering 2030 through 2032. He will earn $4 million in 2027, so cost is not the problem. Defining his role is.
That affordable figure gives Detroit considerable flexibility, but it also keeps Keith central to a roster now being redesigned around a younger, increasingly crowded infield core.

Keith has appeared in 63 games at third base and 10 at first this season. He also fits as a designated hitter, while his original position, second base, belongs to Gleyber Torres.
That arrangement could change quickly. Torres can enter free agency after the season, and it was previously explained why Detroit cannot attach another qualifying offer to him. His departure could reopen second base, although Kevin McGonigle, Hao-Yu Lee, and other young infielders complicate the alignment.
Detroit does not appear to regret Keith's extension. His salary remains manageable, his offense has improved, and his versatility gives manager A.J. Hinch options.
However, the Tigers did not make that early commitment merely to create a strong-side platoon bat. They envisioned a foundational player. Keith's next step is proving that he can stay in the lineup regardless of who stands on the mound—and showing Detroit exactly where he belongs in 2027.
