The Detroit Tigers continued moving Colt Keith around the diamond during the final weeks of 2026. One unusual statistical split suggested that the position he occupied might matter more than expected.
Keith carried an .824 OPS across 182 plate appearances as a third baseman through Sunday, according to the positional breakdown noted in a Bless You Boys game recap .
His production fell to a .677 OPS over 156 plate appearances as the designated hitter and a .602 OPS across 50 plate appearances while playing first base.
Those differences did not prove that third base caused Keith to become a better hitter. They did, however, give the Tigers another factor to consider while attempting to organize an increasingly crowded 2027 infield.

A player's defensive position should not directly determine what happens when he enters the batter's box. The pitcher, ballpark, quality of contact, and timing of each assignment could all influence the results.
Keith also received far fewer plate appearances at first base than he did at third, making the .602 OPS especially vulnerable to small-sample fluctuations. One productive week could substantially change that number.
The third-base results remain difficult to ignore. An .824 OPS over 182 plate appearances represents more than a handful of favorable games, and Keith has shown that he could handle the defensive responsibilities of the position.
Detroit still should not treat the split as proof that moving him elsewhere damaged his offense. The more useful conclusion is that Keith has performed well enough at third to remain a legitimate candidate there.
His versatility offers considerable value, but constant movement could also prevent the club from establishing a clear defensive alignment. Determining his best position would help the Tigers make more informed decisions about the players around him.

Keith received additional opportunities at first base because Hinch wanted to maintain his at-bats while evaluating Kevin McGonigle , Hao-Yu Lee , and John Peck on the left side of the infield.
"I don't want to bury anybody," Hinch told MLB.com's Jason Beck while explaining the balancing act.
That short-term solution did not establish where Keith would play in 2027. Spencer Torkelson remains part of the first-base discussion, while McGonigle, Lee and Peck require opportunities at shortstop, third and second.
The Tigers could continue using Keith as a multi-position player. They could also decide that establishing him at third base gives the overall infield its most productive structure.
Any decision must account for defense and roster balance rather than relying on OPS alone. Detroit should evaluate Keith's range, throwing, comfort and long-term projection at each position alongside his offensive results.
His left-handed bat should keep him involved regardless of the final alignment. The larger question involves whether moving him around remains the best way to maximize that bat.
Keith's position split offers a clue, not a final answer. If his success at third continues through the end of the campaign, however, the Tigers will have a compelling reason to consider making it his permanent home.
