INDIANAPOLIS – Days removed from his team's seven-game skid to close last season, sealing a fifth straight missed postseason,Coltsgeneral managerChris Ballardwas asked about his offseason checklist.
"I think our defensive front, we've got to add some fuel. We've got to get younger. We've got to get faster – unequivocally – on defense," Ballard said. Two months later, the GM had traded away one of his 29-year-old starting linebackers and let the other walk in free agency.

"I don't know the plan but I'll be ready when my number is called," Pratt told reporters Wednesday, one day after the Colts signed him to the practice squad in the wake of the team's latest underwhelming performance from its linebackers. "Right now, I'm on the practice squad to help guys and be the best teammate I can be. That's my job, and that's my goal – to elevate the (linebackers) room and help them be successful."
The Colts signed Pratt almost a year ago to start the team's final 12 games at weakside linebacker after the Raiders released Pratt four games into 2025 and the Colts had an immediate need, with starter Joe Bachie landing on injured reserve with a toe injury. Pratt's stat line says he delivered 101 tackles, five for a loss, a pair of recovered fumbles, one forced fumble, eight passes defended and an interception.

Pratt believes his impact stretched beyond the numbers.
"Last year, I came in here, and I was stable," Pratt said. "I was able to help stabilize the position and just help the defense, having been in this system for so long. It's all I know."
Colts head coach Shane Steichen said, above all, Pratt brings a much-needed "veteran presence" to the team's struggling linebackers room.
"We've got some young guys in there," Steichen said of a pair of rookies, second-round pick CJ Allen and fourth-rounder Bryce Boettcher, along with Week 1 starter Jaylon Carlies, currently out with a rib injury and who missed extensive time his first two years in the league with various ailments. "We'll get (Pratt) up to speed, see where he's at this week, and then we'll go from there."

The Colts decided seven months ago at the opening of free agency that Pratt wasn't good enough – an oddity the veteran linebacker was asked about Wednesday.
"Umm, I mean, when opportunities come, you take advantage of them," he said. "This is part of the business I've never experienced but it's always a blessing to play in the (NFL). It don't matter where things go."
When pushed on whether he wanted to re-sign with the Colts when free agency opened up in March, Pratt offered this: "I just wanted an opportunity to play football again."
Once it became clear Pratt wouldn't start training camp on an NFL roster, he called his college coach, N.C. State's Dave Doeren, now in his 14th season, and became a volunteer assistant working with the linebackers. Pratt landed a tryout with the Cowboys three games into the season but nothing came of it.

The call from the Colts wasn't exactly sudden – "(The talks) were off and on," Pratt said – but the formal request to join the team came just days ago.
"As a football player and a competitor, I can play," Pratt said when asked if he'd be ready to play a significant number of snaps for the Colts' Week 6 home game against the Titans on Sunday.
With Carlies' injury, Boettcher seemed primed to play an elevated role in Pittsburgh on Sunday but the rookie weakside linebacker played just 11 snaps on defense (18% of the snaps) – and just a couple after taking an aggressive angle to try to tackle running back Jaylen Warren on the sidelines of what turned into an 80-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
Allen played 24 snaps, more than doubling his total over the first four games (11), but the Georgia standout was playing out of position. The Colts see him as a middle linebacker but his development has come along far too slowly, forcing 29-year-old Akeem Davis-Gaither into an elevated role. Despite his two missed tackles Sunday, Davis-Gaither's role appears to be safe until Allen can replace the veteran.

Pratt going from his couch to the starting lineup in seven days doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility, given Boettcher's struggles Sunday, Allen's lack of positional fit and Carlies' injury (he didn't practice Wednesday).
Opposing teams, at times, feasted on Pratt and fellow ex-Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin's struggles in pass coverage a year ago, though Pratt's opposing quarterback rating when he was the nearest defender in coverage (85.3) was considerably better than Franklin's figure (103.3). Pratt's age certainly showed at times in those 12 games but he brings a plug-and-play knowledge of Lou Anarumo's system that may outweigh the drawbacks of his age and athletic limitations.
He's not what the Colts thought they needed seven months ago. Sunday could be the chance to officially prove them wrong, while helping them win.
"Leadership. Elevate the room," said Pratt when asked what he thought he could bring to the linebackers room. "(I can) help the guys process it faster, understand their (role) on the defense, understand the scheme and help them grow each and every week."
