1. Everybody on PUP

This could have been split into three separate entries, but it can be summed up in one succinct section. Defensive lineman Deatrich Wise, edge rusher Dorance Armstrong , and cornerback Trey Amos have all seen their stock drop for the simplest reason possible: they're not on the field.

That doesn't mean things won't change once they return, but the question that stands is what do their roles look like when they actually get back out there? There's their own standard of play in question, but all three also play in crowded position groups.

Take Wise, for instance. The Commanders' defensive line currently features Javon Kinlaw , Tim Settle , Daron Payne , Charles Omenihu , Johnny Newton, and DJ Davidson. That's five, maybe even six, players already built into the depth chart ahead of him.

The same goes for Armstrong. Odafe Oweh , K'Lavon Chaisson, and Joshua Josephs are all currently practicing and getting reps while Armstrong sits on the sideline. Armstrong is one of the team's better pass rushers and should factor in heavily this season, but it's fair to wonder when he'll return from injury and what he looks like once he's back.

Then there's Amos. Rasul Douglas ' arrival pushed Amos toward the back end of the rotation. Douglas, Mike Sainristil , and Amik Robinson should be the top three corners heading into 2026. Antonio Hamilton Sr. provides solid depth, and Tyler Owens , while still young and inexperienced, is developing. Amos won't necessarily sit on the bench all year, but it remains to be seen what his role looks like once he returns to the fold.

2. Quan Martin

Quan Martin had a positive 2024, looking like a promising player at safety. Then came double shoulder surgery in the offseason, followed by a significant step back in 2025. So far, that regression has lingered into camp.

Reports indicate Martin has been inconsistent and has had a tough time finding his footing in Daronte Jones' new defense. That's concerning because Martin is the best center fielder among all the safeties on the roster. Washington has guys who can fill in deep from time to time, but in terms of playing the position consistently at a high level, Martin is that guy.

Without him playing well on a regular basis, you have to wonder what the Commanders are going to do at deep safety. Jeremy Reaves is a viable option who has grown over the last couple of years in terms of his defensive play. Nick Cross brings intriguing speed, but his time in Indianapolis showed he often had issues when asked to play deep consistently.

3. Wide receiver Jaylin Lane

Jaylin Lane is a great returner. There's no doubt about that. General manager Adam Peters made it clear when he drafted Lane, calling him the best returner in the entire 2025 draft class. But so far in camp, Lane has not looked the part of a receiver.

That was the big question for Lane heading into this season: could he start adding more value on the roster as a viable option in the passing attack? Dropped passes, miscommunications, and poor route running have all been markers of Lane's training camp performance as he tries to up his game at the position. Unfortunately, it just hasn't panned out so far.

None of this means these players can't improve. None of it is set in stone. But it's something to take into consideration now that Washington is one week into padded practices. Hopefully, their arrows start pointing up sooner rather than later.
