Another move has materialized in the secondary after the Washington Commanders announced a pair of roster moves to restock the unit through training camp.
The first was the departure of cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who has been placed on the reserve/retired list, ending his stint with the Commanders before it ever began. The veteran arrived in Washington after inking in late May one day after working out for the team where he was expected to serve as a depth piece in the room.
Witherspoon began his career with the San Francisco 49ers after being drafted with the 66th overall pick in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the first year that Adam Peters was with the organization as the new vice president of player personnel. He spent his first four seasons with the 49ers where he materialized into a starter as a rookie before being paired opposite side of Richard Sherman the next two seasons. After then signing a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks after his contract expired in 2021, Witherspoon would then traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a fifth round pick months later before eventually inking with the Los Angeles Rams the following season, starting on the practice squad before moving to the 53-man roster.
His departure marked somewhat of a surprise given Witherspoon was still practicing with the team on Monday, but the front office wasted no time filling his spot in the room.
Veteran cornerback Fabian Moreau has signed with the Commanders for a second stint with the organization.
Moreau, 32, first arrived in Washington as a third round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft where he registered 14 pass deflections, three forced fumbles and six interceptions across 18 starts and 60 appearances over his four seasons with the organization. Yet his production dropped off having notched just one interception and 31 pass deflections in the five seasons since then across stints with the Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos and New York Giants.
How much of a role the veteran plays in the secondary remains to be seen, though his arrival for Tuesday's practice adds depth to restock a position that has drawn attention this offseason.
Moreau becomes the third cornerback addition ahead of the 2026 regular season alongside Amik Robertson and Rasul Douglas, who could step into an impact role as Trey Amos still sidelined after being placed on PUP ahead of the start of training camp.
