You can cross off one free agent for the Washington Commanders . Washington, which has over 30 players set to become free agents next month, reached an agreement with three-time Pro Bowl punter Tress Way on a contract extension. The deal is one year in length, much like the one the soon-to-be 36-year-old Way signed last offseason.
Way entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from the University of Oklahoma in 2013. After signing with the Chicago Bears , Way was released just before the 2014 season, and Washington claimed him. He's been the franchise's punter ever since. Over the last 12 seasons, Way has averaged 46.9 yards per punt, with a net average of 41.7 yards. In addition to being selected to the Pro Bowl three times, Way was a second-team All-Pro selection in 2019.
Way had another phenomenal season in 2025, averaging 47.3 yards per punt, with a net of 43.9. Only four of Way's 56 punts landed in the end zone last season, and he landed 29 of those punts inside the 20-yard line, for a remarkable 51.9% average.
Way was a Washington captain for years until head coach Dan Quinn arrived in 2024 and changed to weekly captains. In addition to being one of the team's most reliable and consistent performers, he's also a beloved teammate and active in the community.
