The Washington Commanders will retire Hall of Fame running back John Riggins' iconic No. 44 jersey when they host the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Nov. 8, marking another milestone in franchise history.

The team announced the honor Thursday by releasing a nearly seven-minute tribute video celebrating Riggins' career. ESPN's Adam Schefter also confirmed the ceremony in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"Commanders are retiring John Riggins' No.44 jersey on Sunday, Nov. 8th, when Washington hosts the Los Angeles Rams."

The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at Northwest Stadium and will be televised on FOX.
Riggins remains one of the most accomplished players in franchise history. He spent nine seasons with Washington from 1976-79 and 1981-85 after beginning his NFL career with the New York Jets. During his Hall of Fame career, Riggins rushed for 11,352 yards and 104 touchdowns while earning seven Pro Bowl selections and a first-team All-Pro honor.

His legacy in Washington was cemented during the 1982 season, when he helped lead the franchise to its first Super Bowl championship. Riggins was named Super Bowl XVII MVP after rushing for 166 yards and a touchdown in Washington's victory over the Miami Dolphins . His memorable 43-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-1 remains one of the defining plays in Super Bowl history.

Riggins also set an NFL postseason record by scoring a touchdown in eight consecutive playoff games during Washington's championship run. He retired following the 1985 season and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
Retiring Riggins' No. 44 jersey places him among the most celebrated figures in franchise history and recognizes his lasting impact on one of the NFL's most successful eras in Washington.
The ceremony will take place before the Commanders face the Rams on Nov. 8, adding another significant moment to the organization's 2026 season.
