Commanders re-sign former third-round pick after surprise retirement
The Washington Commanders opened up Tuesday morning with a surprising pair of roster moves. Veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who signed in March, was placed on the reserve/retired list . In a corresponding move, the Commanders signed a familiar name to replace Witherspoon: cornerback Fabian Moreau.
Moreau was Washington's third-round pick, No. 81 overall, in the 2017 NFL Draft, back when Bruce Allen was the general manager/president and Jay Gruden was the head coach. He spent four seasons in Washington, appearing in 60 games with 18 starts. He recorded 125 tackles, 14 passes defended and six interceptions during his time with the Redskins/Football Team.

Moreau's been on a journey since his time in Washington, having spent time with the Falcons, Texans , Giants , Broncos , 49ers and two stints with the Vikings. It was in Minnesota where Moreau played for Commanders defensive coordinator Daronte Jones, including last season, when Jones was the Vikings secondary coach/defensive pass game coordinator. He served as Minnesota's No. 3 cornerback at times last season, playing in 11 games.
For his career, Moreau has appeared in 124 games, making 56 starts. He has recorded 322 tackles, 45 passes defended and seven interceptions.
Witherspoon was with the Commanders on Monday for their first padded practice. Washington is back on the practice field Tuesday morning.
