The Washington Commanders opened Tuesday morning with some surprising news. Veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon was placed on the reserve/retired list. The 31-year-old was just on the practice field for the first day in pads on Monday.
Witherspoon signed with the Commanders in March. In a corresponding move, Washington signed Fabian Moreau , a familiar name to fans, as he was a Redskins' third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Interestingly, Witherspoon was also a third-round pick in 2017.
Witherspoon spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers , where general manager Adam Peters served as the vice president of player personnel. He signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks in 2021, but was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers just before Week 1. He re-signed with Pittsburgh on a two-year deal, but was released after the 2022 season. Witherspoon then signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams , where he'd spend the next two seasons.
Witherspoon appeared in 96 games in his NFL career, making 64 starts. He recorded 243 tackles and 13 interceptions in his career.
Witherspoon was one of five cornerbacks expected to make the Commanders' 53-man roster, alongside Mike Sainristil , Trey Amos , Amik Robertson and recently signed Rasul Douglas .
