Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Jack Sawyer revealed a concerning injury update when talking about defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day during an interview on Chalk Talk with Gerry Dulac on 102.5 WDVE .
"Obviously, we're looking forward to getting Derrick [Harmon] back. It sucks we're not gonna be able to get Sebastian back for — maybe at all," Sawyer said.
Derrick Harmon and Joseph-Day are both currently on injured reserve. Joseph-Day was placed on IR due to a triceps injury on Oct. 22. The first game that he will be eligible to return will be the Week 12 game against the Denver Broncos.
Joseph-Day popped up on the injury report on Wednesday, Oct. 21, as the veteran did not practice. Joseph-Day played 26 snaps in the Week 6 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a season high.
Joseph-Day has recorded 10 total tackles (three solos) and one fumble recovery through six games this season. Joseph-Day's fumble recovery off Harmon's strip sack on Joe Burrow sealed a Steelers' win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3.
Sixth-round rookie Gabriel Rubio and undrafted rookie Kevin Jobity have stepped up with Harmon and Joseph-Day out. But losing Joseph-Day for the season would be a big loss. Harmon was placed on IR on Oct. 5, so he could return soon.
Sebastian Joseph-Day is very versatile, playing nose tackle, three-technique defensive tackle and defensive end.
"I think, honestly, it's me not boxing myself in," Joseph-Day said about his versatility. "From the start, the beginning of my career, I played a lot of nose next to Aaron Donald, then when I left the Rams, we kinda had a need. We had one of our D-tackles that they signed get hurt, so they were like, 'Hey, can you play this three?' I was like, 'Whatever the team needs me to do.' And I did it, and I just didn't box myself in.
"Whenever I went to Tennessee, there was (T'Vondre) Sweat. Sweat is like 360 pounds, he's a big man. So obviously he couldn't play four or five, so it was a no-brainer. Jeff (Simmons) was a three, and I was like, 'I'll play the five. I'll play the six. I'll play the four.' … Just being (able) to adapt and take pride in being that guy to whatever you need me to do, I'll be that (Swiss Army) knife."
