Florida State Seminoles running back Tre Wisner surprisingly played zero snaps in the 27-24 loss to No. 19 SMU on Monday night. He was not listed on FSU's injury report. Instead, Florida State leaned heavily on Ousmane Kromah , who rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Wisner's $650 NIL valuation (via On3) is one of the largest deals for his position. As a result, Wisner's absence from the season opener drew curiosity among fans and analysts alike.
Upon learning about Wisner's absence on Monday, analyst Emmanuel Acho discussed college football's transfer portal and NIL era, where players are chasing big paydays over remaining and developing at the same place.
"This is what makes this era of the transfer portal so confusing for me," Acho wrote on X. "On one hand, if you can play, you can play! Don't run to where it's easier, work to be better. On the other hand, an athlete like this may never have another $650K opportunity in his life. I would stay and grind, but I'm learning to accept those who chase the $$."
Wisner arrived at Florida State after his stint with Texas , where he played two productive seasons. In 2024, he rushed for 1,064 yards and five touchdowns on 226 carries. Last year, he recorded 597 yards and three touchdowns despite missing time.
There was no reason provided why Wisner didn't get any touches against SMU. He had four carries for 34 yards and three catches for 4 yards as the Seminoles cruised in their Week 0 opener against New Mexico State 34-17.
FSU's Tre Wisner Was Named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List
Just two weeks ago, Florida State running back Tre Wisner was named to the 2026 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List.
The award is given to the best offensive player in Division I football who either graduated from a Texas high school or currently plays for a Texas-based Division I program. Wisner qualifies because he is from Mexia, Texas.
Before arriving at FSU, Wisner spent three years with the Longhorns, where the running back rushed for 1,734 yards and nine touchdowns on 369 carries. He also had 457 yards and two TDs on 66 receptions. He was named to the third-team All-SEC in 2024 and set a school record for running backs with 44 receptions that season.
Wisner was also named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List. However, Florida State didn't play him for some snaps in the opener. Only time can tell if the school offers him an opportunity in its next game, which is at No. 13 Alabama on Sept. 19.
