Boston Red Sox pitcher Sonny Gray directly called out Baltimore Orioles infielder Blaze Alexander after Boston's third straight win on Saturday. Fans reacted to Gray's reaction after the benches-clearing incident from the other day.
Meanwhile, Gray, who started Saturday, said the incident motivated Boston. After throwing seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in the 5-0 victory, he said:
"We wanted to kind of bury these guys, especially after whatever that dude was trying to do last night, so yeah," Gray said.
Gray's post-game comments ignited all kinds of reactions from fans:
"Dude, they are so corny," one fan wrote.
On Saturday, the Red Sox used the incident as a source of motivation to shut out the Orioles in the second straight game. The game was tied until Boston broke through in the sixth inning against Chris Bassitt . Eli White drove in two runs, while Connor Wong added another RBI to make it 3-0. Isiah Kiner-Falefa added a two-run double in the seventh. The Orioles received many opportunities to score, but they stranded their runners in scoring position on all seven occasions.
What Happened Between Red Sox and Orioles INF Blaze Alexander
Sonny Gray's comments on Saturday stemmed from Friday night's 1-0 Red Sox victory. In the eighth inning, Alexander entered into a heated exchange with Boston's Nick Sogard following his slide into second during the double-play. The verbal exchange led to players from both dugouts and bullpens coming onto the field. There were no punches or any ejections, though.
After getting up, Alexander noticed that Boston players were staring at him. The Orioles infielder took exception to that and started exchanging words with Sogard. Alexander wondered why Boston players were giving him such a look after that play.
"I don't know why they're upset. I didn't touch them," Alexander said . "There's more contact on the play last night."
Meanwhile, Sogard gave a different interpretation. The Red Sox infielder had no issue with Alexander's slide and said he was simply looking back to see how far Alexander had gone after the play.
"He slid in pretty hard. I didn't have a problem with the slide, but we turned the double play," Sogard said after the game . "I was just looking back to see how far he went. I don't know if he liked me looking back… I didn't say anything until he started talking."
In the end, Boston improved to 78-65 and remained in the AL's second wild-card position, while Baltimore dropped to 69-74.
