The left-hander didn't simply survive his first appearance in the big leagues. He looked like he belonged. Drake worked five innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five hitters on 85 pitches. For Arizona, the performance carries significance beyond one game. The Diamondbacks acquired Kohl Drake in the Merrill Kelly trade before bringing Kelly back in free agency last offseason. If Drake develops into a dependable Major League starter, Arizona could end up benefiting twice from the same transaction, adding future talent without permanently losing a respected veteran. Fans should also appreciate what Drake's outing means strategically. Quality starting pitching has become one of baseball's most valuable and expensive assets.
