From LaMelo Ball to Minnesota , Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami and every player that the Los Angeles Lakers have signed, the 2026 off-season free agency has been pretty wild.
After a pretty active couple of days, however, things have slowed down a bit, and it's all because one person's decision will likely dictate how the rest of the free agency landscape will play out.
We're talking, of course, about the one and only LeBron James , who parted ways with the Lakers and is now weighing his options on which team he'll be joining for his 24th and possibly final season in the NBA.
As expected, almost every team in the league has thrown its name in the LeBron sweepstakes. Still, if you're to believe the insiders, the race is down to three teams, namely, the Cleveland Cavaliers , the Heat, and the Philadelphia 76ers .
Obviously, each team has a compelling argument for why James should join them. For the Heat, it's joining forces with Giannis and returning to the franchise that gave him his first two NBA championships. For the Sixers, it's the possibility of winning a fifth championship with a fourth franchise and of playing alongside a retooled core led by Joel Embiid , Tyrese Maxey , and the newly acquired Jaylen Brown .
For the Cavaliers, it's coming back home and authoring a storybook ending by winning a second title in the place where it all began, while also getting to play alongside Donovan Mitchell , James Harden , and Evan Mobley , a core that made it all the way to the Conference Finals last season.
Can LeBron and Harden work together?
If James chooses to come home and team up with Spida and The Beard, NBA legend Tim Hardaway believes he could bring out the best in someone like Harden.
On the most recent episode of the Crossover Podcast, Hardaway explained how James' leadership could challenge someone like Harden into shaking off some of the playoff struggles that have plagued him pretty much his entire career.
"I'mma say this, LeBron has brought out the best in people that we didn't think that he could bring out the best in...if he goes there and he gets in front of James Harden, you never know. James Harden could come out of what he is in during the playoffs and be that MF we know he can be, and take it to the next level," Hardaway said .
To be fair to Harden, he was still arguably one of the best 20 to 25 players in the league last season, even at age 36. The former league MVP and 11-time All-Star averaged 23.6 points, 8.0 assists, and 4.8 rebounds in 70 games played with the Los Angeles Clippers and the Cavaliers combined.
Harden also helped the Cavaliers reach the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2018, which was, coincidentally, the last season of James' second stint with the Cavaliers.
"LeBron can do that, and I think that's the only way they can win," Hardaway continued. "If LeBron goes there, I think he would…not put pressure on, but challenge [Harden]. I don't think James Harden has been challenged by one of his teammates that he respects."
The LeBron James difference
Over the years, Harden has played with a number of champions and future Hall of Famers like Kevin Durant , Russell Westbrook , Chris Paul , Kyrie Irving , Joel Embiid, and Kawhi Leonard , just to name a few.
If James does become Harden's latest high-profile teammate, he instantly becomes the most decorated of the star guard's running mates. Hardaway believes that James will receive a different level of respect from Harden than someone like Paul, who was Harden's teammate in Houston .
"He don't respect Chris Paul, he didn't win a championship," Hardaway claimed. "I'm talking about somebody who's a four-time MVP and a four-time champion. [LeBron] comes in and [Harden's] 'gon be like 'Yeah, I gotta listen to this motherf-cker.' and I think he will."
If this all comes to fruition, how far do you think a lineup of Harden, Mitchell, James, Mobley and Jarrett Allen will go?
